Tripsacum is the name of a kind of plants monocotylédones of the family of the Poacées, which includes/understands about fifteen species. Originating in Central America, it is very close to the kind Zea which includes/understands the Maïs.

General characteristics

The Tripsacum are perennial plants thanks to an apparatus racinaire ramified and equipped with Rhizome S. the plant tillers abundantly, forming important tufts being able to reach three meters in height and a meter in diameter at the base.

The Inflorescence S, in the shape of loose panicles, are bisexuées but made up of unisexuées flowers, grouped in épillet S of two flowers, including only one fertile in the female épillets. The female flowers are at the base of the inflorescences and the flowers male at the top.

Distribution

The species of Tripsacum are mainly present at the Mexico, but their surface of distribution includes a zone vaster energy of the the United States in north until the Paraguay in the south. This kind is unknown in the Old world.
