The trip hammer with white belly ( Tachymarptis Melba ) is also known under the names of alpine trip hammer or of royal trip hammer .

In 1758, Carl von Linné baptized it Apus Melba but in 1922, Austin Roberts created the kind Tachymarptis of which it is the species-type.
