Trio

In a general way, a trio - intermediate between Duet and the Quartet - indicates a group of three elements, often a group of three people. In Music, the word can take on several directions.

Musical formation

A trio is first of all a musical Ensemble composed of three Musicien S, or of three groups of musicians - i.e., three Pupitre S.

For example, a Pianist, a Violonist and a together playing Violoncellist, form a trio.

In the Rock'n'roll, the prototype of the trio is the formation “low guitar, , battery”, the song being ensured by one or the other of the musicians. But there exist other possible formations, for example Emerson, Lake & Palmer, where the guitar is replaced by a keyboard. The formation in trio makes it possible to produce a music emphasizing the virtuosity of the musicians, and giving an impression of spontaneousness, favourable with the energetic musics like the heavy metal. One of the most famous trios of rock'n'roll was that assembled by Jimi Hendrix, and one of most energetic was Motörhead at its beginnings.

Musical genre

A trio is also a Musical genre dedicated to this type of formation. It indicates a piece of music with three then left simultaneous, intended to be interpreted by three soloists, with or without accompaniment - the Italian word terzetto is sometimes employed to indicate a small trio.

  • In the Classical music, and more precisely, the Chamber music, the word indicates a Sonate for three instruments. The most current shapes of trios are the “trio with piano” (or “trio with keyboard”) - Piano, Violon and Violoncelle - and the “trio with cords” - Violon, viola and Violoncelle.

  • Always in classical music, this word also refers to the central part of a ternary part of Forme - ABA. This direction is at the origin of the “ minuet and trio ” - or of the “ scherzo and trio ” - which often constitutes the third movement of a Symphonie, of a sonata or a related work.

  • In the same way, the trio is also the third part of a walk.
