Before the contact with Europeans, the island of Trinité was occupied by Amerindian tribes, in particular Nepoya and Suppoya. Tobago as for it was inhabited by the Kalinago.

The indigenous name of Trinité was Kairi (or Iere), which would mean " Country of Colibris" (for others that means " quite simply; île").

Christophe Colomb discovered the island of Trinity on July 31st 1498, and its name according to the Holy Trinity gave him. Tobago was named Bella Formed , which became later Tobago, deformation of tobacco (English tobacco).

The Spaniards colonized the island of Trinity. Tobago changed European colonial power regularly. Nevertheless, the colonization of the two islands remained relatively not very important.

The islands were then in turn British, French, Dutch and " lettones" (Courlande) to become finally British at the end of the Napoleonean wars.

The islands were gathered within the same colony by the British in 1889.

These changes explain the origins of the names of the places in the country.

African slaves, Indians, of the Chinese, of the Portuguese, and freed African slaves populated the island at the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Immigrants come from the Barbades, remainder of the the Antilles, Syria and Lebanon come to supplement the melting-pot of the country.

In the beginning, the island was a colony where the cane with sugar was cultivated. The cocoa took over then at the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The incomes of the cocoa decreased with the profit of the oil incomes, new basket of the island, which will change the social structure radically of it.

The presence of American military bases to Chaguaramas and Cumuto with Trinité during the Second world war changed the company radically. During after war, the wave of decolonization which touched the British empire led to the formation of the West Indies Federation (West-Indian Federation) in 1958, union of promotion and assistance to independence.

Chaguaramas was proposed like federal capital. Nevertheless, the dissolution of the federation after the withdrawal of the Jamaica pushed Trinité and Tobago to choose independence in 1962.

In 1976, the country cut the last bonds with the British crown and became a republic within the the Commonwealth.

Oil, the oil products and the natural gas continue to be the spinal column of the economy.

The tourist activity is also central for the island of Tobago, in spite of the crisis which shakes the sector since September 11th, 2001.

Trinity and Tobago remain one of the most prosperous countries of the the Caribbean even if the oil boom of the years 1973-1983 passed.

The June 10th 2006, Trinities and Tobago, linked, play their first participation in the Football world cup against Sweden (0-0) before being inclined thereafter vis-a-vis in England (2-0) and Paraguay (2-0).
