Trindade and Martim Vaz forms a small Brazilian archipelago, located in the south of the Atlantic Ocean which belongs to the State of Espírito Santo and is located at 715 km in the east of Vitória.
It is consisted two principal islands (Trindad and Martim Vaz), separated by 30 kilometers, which have an total surface area of 9,2 km ². These islands are regarded by the navigators as an immense barrier in the middle of the Atlantique. She are not inhabited except for a garrison of 32 men of the Brazilian navy.
The islands are of origin volcanic and have a rocky ground. They are arid, except the south of Trindade.
The islands were discovered in 1501 by the Portuguese navigator João da Nova and belonged to the Portugal until the independence of the Brésil, it became Brazilian then. In 1890, the the United Kingdom occupied Trindade, but the British gave up the islands in 1896 after an agreement with Brazil, found with a mediation of Portugal.
