Trimontium is the name of old a Roman Camp located at Newstead, close to Melrose, in Scotland. Its name “trium montium” (“three mountains”) comes from the three hills of Eildon Hill S. Trimontium, founded towards 80, constituted a advanced position of the Romains in Scotland. Of 140 with 180, approximately, the camp was abandoned year reason of the hostility of the Calédoniens.
Excavations carried out by James Curle between February 1905 and September 1910 allowed discoveries of first order. One put at the day, in particular, the foundations of several successive camps, which proves the military character of Trimontium. The discoveries also related to Roman armours, helmets of cavalry, equipment of horses, good number of Roman parts and of Poterie S. This unit illustrates the remarkable military organization of the Roman army in the South of Scotland. The units of cavalry of Trimontium, went Augustae Vocontiorum , were made up many Voconces of Gaulle southernmost.
Between 1989 and 1993, new excavations were carried out by the department of Archaeological Sciences of the university of Bradford.
Many discovered elements with Trimontium are exposed to the Museum off Scotland of Edinburgh. One finds also a museum devoted to Trimontium, in the town of Melrose.
