Tribonien
Tribonien (v. 500 - 547) was a Byzantine lawyer whose role, in the édiction of the Corpus juris civilis (Code of Justinien) was fundamental.
Born towards 500 in Pamphylie, the historians estimate that it was certainly more Latin language than of Greek language. Jean the Lydian indicates that it was of field crop. He probably studied the right to the university of Beirut and its culture extended to other fields that the right (history of the Roman Republic, Roman Empire); its contemporaries note however that it was affublé of two major defects: its excessive slavish flattery and its sordid avarice. These two reproaches were however never reproached to him by Justinien, which preferred to stick to its qualities.
Tribonien began its career in the offices of Constantinople and arrives quickly, into 529, with the load of questeur of the palate, charged to reform the right. In spite of a short eclipse, in 533-534, it preserved its load until the end of its life.
The " Tribonien" commission;
Convinced of the need for reforming the right, Justinien named, on February 15th 528, a commission of 10 lawyers, in particular including a law professor of the university of Constantinople, name of Theophilus.
This commission had as an instruction to publish the imperial constitutions enacted since Hadrian and joined together in the codes Gregorian, hermogénien and théodosien, like raising there and removing all the contradictory provisions of them. Worked out of 14 month, this new code was promulgated on April 7th 529 under the name of Code of Justinien and its provisions replaced, near the courts, those of the former codes.
This code was however replaced, on November 16th, 534, by a second Codex , was prepared by another commission, more restricted and it so chaired by Tribonien, which came into effect the next on December 29th and which became the Codex juris civilis " officiel".
