The word tribology , built starting from the Greek roots tribein (to rub) and Logos (speech, study), was proposed in 1968 per G. Solomon to indicate the Science which studies the phenomena likely to occur between two material systems in contact, motionless or animated relative movements. It recovers, inter alia, all the fields of the Frottement , the wear and the Lubrification .
Some aspects of tribology
The manifestations of friction are integrated into our daily behaviors. In a world which knows neither friction nor adherence, our simplest gestures would become for the majority inoperative: to hold a pencil, to tie its shoes, to tighten a screw, to support a scale with the wall or quite simply to go. We would have neither bicycles, neither cars, nor trains, at least in the form which is familiar for us…
Contrary, we are in general conscious of the disadvantages of friction, causes bulbs and source, of wear or extra efforts required for the same work, therefore of wasting of energy and raw materials.
Here some examples:
- With equal travelling mass, to overcome frictions, the Road transport consumes approximately 5 times more energy than the rail-bound Transport .
- the wear of the road coatings varies like the fourth power of the load to the Essieu (note: this relation is probably partial or false, cf discussion). Thus, taking into account the distribution of the Mass S, a truck of 13 ton S with two axles degrades the roads as much as 100.000 cars . The calculation of the highway coatings holds account almost only heavy trucks, the cars intervening very little or at all. With the Canada, conscious so the government recently modified the distribution of the product of the Taxe S on the Carburant S by considering that “the Gasoil is used mainly by the heavy vehicles responsible for the major part of wear of the roads”.
- the components of the machines and the equipment are much more often destroyed by the damage of their surface than by the dislocation of their volume. On a side, they is happy, because the brutal rupture of a part can cause serious accidents, whereas the slow degradation caused by wear leaves time to intervene. The control of wear is a frightening economic weapon: in a technical object, all the components do not wear at the same rate/rhythm and it is important to avoid the " on-qualité" (component in perfect state whereas the unit is out of use following the failure of another part) even, more cynically, to organize the need for the user for calling upon an after-sales service while limiting the cost of the intervention (accessibility and price of the " parts of usure")
