Tribes of Israel

The first book of the Hebraic Bible or the Old Testament the Genesis, finishes with the installation in Egypt of the Hebrew , or more exactly, of 12 wire of Jacob /Isra ël, founders of the 12 tribes. The twelve wire are:

  • Réouven (known as, in French, Ruben)
  • Shiméone (known as, in French, Siméon)
  • Lévi (tribe dedicated to the service of the Temple of Jerusalem)
  • Yéhouda (known as, in French, Juda) (whose the dynasty comes from the king David)
  • Issa' har (known as, in French, Issacar)
  • Zévouloune (known as, in French, Zébulon)
  • daN
  • Naphthali
  • Gad
  • Asher
  • Yossef (known as, in French, Joseph) (2 tribes of it result: Menaché (known as, in French, Manassé) and Éphraïm)
  • Biniamine (known as, in French, Benjamin)

The calculation of the twelve tribes thus corresponds to twelve wire of Jacob, except Lévi, the Levites not having a clean territory, and except Joseph which is replaced by its two sons.

It should be noted that the book of the Apocalypse, allotted to the Jean apostle, quotes the twelve tribes of Israel in chapter 7, verses 4 and following, without mentioning the tribe of daN (but by quoting that of Lévi and, like tribes with whole share those of Ephraïm and Manassé).
