The Tribbles or Tribules , are in the universe of fiction of Star Trek , an animal specie Extraterrestre originating in the Planet Iota Geminorum IV.

Physiology

Tribbles are creatures appearing itself as small inoffensive balls of hairs which emit a kind of humming when they are touched. Besides this humming has an alleviating effect on the nervous system of the Humains.

But the fundamental characteristic of Tribbles is their capacity to be reproduced at a phenomenal speed. Indeed, most of their metabolism is devoted to the reproduction, which enables them to give rise to small on average every twelve hours. Tribbles are born pregnant and it is thought that ten creatures is able to generate more than 1 700.000 Tribbles in only three days! However, this reproduction is not possible that if Tribbles have sufficient food.

This is why, on their planet of origin, a Draconian control is exerted on their population by a considerable limitation of their food and by the presence of predatory.

Obviously, when Tribbles are found in an environment not exerting this control more, their multiplication can have an effect extremely devastator. The Klingon S declared besides these creatures “enemy of the empire” and dedicate a major hatred to them.

History

The Human ones met Tribbles for the first time into 2150, when the doctor Phlox brought of it a small number on board the '' Enterprise NX-01 '' like food for his pets (see Star Trek: Enterprise : Tolerance - The Breach ).

The second meeting with the Human ones takes place into 2268 when a tradesman of the name of Cyrano Jones into pleasing a specimen on board the '' Enterprise NCC-1701 '', which results in to invade in a few days the aforementioned vessel of a number impressing of Tribbles (see Star Trek, the original series : Tribulations - The Disturbs with Tribbles ).

Tribbles will be finally definitively eliminated by Klingons warriors at the end from XXIVe century, which will cause this sarcastic remark of the chief of safety Odo on the station Deep Space Nine : “Still a glorious chapter of the history of Klingons! Say to me, exists it songs celebrating great hunting for Tribbles? ” (see Star Trek: Deep Space Nine : Tests and tribulations - Trials and Tribble-ations ).
