In the series of the History of the Earth of the Medium written by Tolkien, the trees of Valinor are two trees bearing the names of Telperion the white and gilded Laurelin .
Laurelin means “gold Song”. It is also called “Red-gilded” Culúrien and Malinalda “Tree yellow”. Telperion as for him is called Silpion “Money-brilliance” and Ninquelotë “Fleur white”.
The first growth becomes the Telperion tree which represents the moon and is male kind. Its sheets are of a dark green and it spreads a silver plated light.
The second growth gives Laurelin which represents the sun and is female kind. Its sheets are of a tender green and it spreads a gilded light.
The Trees are the source of any light of Valinor, and are used as a basis for the account of time: each day of Valar counts twelve hours, and finishes with the decline of Laurelin. Each tree sees its glare growing during seven hours, then to decline during five hours until disappearing, and growing again one hour before the other does not cease shining. Thus, twice a day, one can see the light mixed with the two trees, one on his decline and the other with the dawn.
Telperion was the first to be flowered, and the first hour lit by its light is called the Inaugural Hour , which is not in the calculation of the hours, but which marks the beginning of the reign of Valar on Valinor. Telperion fades per sixth hour, and Laurelin with the twelfth.
Melkor is free of going and coming in Valinor, Manwë the repented believer; but it of it is nothing. When the lies which it sowed are about to be bored up to date, it flees and will find the spider Ungoliant. He convinces it to help it, and they go until Ezellohar under cover of the darkness caused by Ungoliant. Morgoth then wounds the two trees and Ungoliant aspires their sap all in their instilling his poison, causing the death of the Trees. Neither the tears of Nienna, nor the incantations of Yavanna can give again life to them. Of each tree, only one branch reappears to give only one fruit. It will be the Moon for Telperion and the Sun for Laurelin.
There exists a kid of Telperion, made by Yavanna for the Ñoldor of Tirion: Galathilion. This tree is similar to Telperion but is not source of light. Of him are resulting Celeborn, the white Tree of Tol Eressëa, then Nimloth, the white Tree of Númenor, and finally the white Arbre of Gondor.
