Tree of Ténéré

the Tree of Ténéré was a solitary Acacia, that is to say a Acacia raddiana or a Acacia tortilus , which at one time was regarded as the Arbre more isolated from the Ground - no other tree being located at less than 400 km. It acted as reference mark for the roads of the Caravane S which crossed the desert of the Ténéré to the North-East of the Niger; it was roughly located par.

It is undoubtedly a question of the only tree ever to be represented on a chart with the 1/4  000  000e.

It was about the last survivor of a group of tree which had pushed when the desert was less arid than now and he rose, only, during decades. During the winter 1938-1939, a well was drilled close to the tree and one discovered that his roots reached the Ground water, more than 30 meters in lower part of surface.

In 1973, the tree was reversed by a Libyan truck-driver, undoubtedly drunk. November 8th, 1973, the dead tree was transported to the National museum of Niger, with Niamey and was replaced by a simple metal sculpture representing a tree.
