Trebisonda Valla

Trebisonda Valla also called Ondina Valla , born the May 20th 1916 with Bologna and died the October 16th 2006 with its residence of Aquila, was the first Athlète Italy did not gain Olympic gold. It gained it over the 80 hedges with the Olympic Games of summer of 1936 with Berlin after having established new world records at the time of the semi-final.

Biography

It was called Trebisonda - a very unusual first name - according to the Turkish city of Trabzon (Italian Trebisonda in ), that his/her father regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of the world. It was the girl junior by the family, born after her four brothers and was generally called by its nickname " Ondina" (which means " small vague").

Ondina Valla, young girl, had already much personality and talent for the sport. Its rival with the school championships of her city was Claudia Testoni, this one will remain her adversary for the remainder of their careers. 13 years old, Ondina was already regarded as one better athletes of Italy. The following year, it became national champion and was selected in national team.

She was a very complete athlete, capable of excellent results in sprint, on the races of hedges or in jump. Quickly, it becomes preferred Italian supporters. For the Fascistic government , it was a symbol of triumphing national youth.

Its greater success was the best of gold gained over the 80 m hedges of the Olympic Games of summer of 1936 of Berlin. The August 5th, it gained its half-fianle in the time of 11" 6, establishing new world records. The next day took place the final. It was a race tightened with four athletes arriving together on the finishing line. There was no doubt as for the victory of Valla, but it was necessary to resort to the Photo finish to indicate the bronze and money medals which returned respectively to Anni Steuer and Elizabeth Taylor-Campbell. The rival of Valla, Claudia Testoni finished fourth, without medal.

After these plays, Ondina Valla was forced to limit its participation in competitions to causes of problems of back. It continued nevertheless to run until beginning of the year 40.
