Treaty of Tarascon
The treated of Tarascon , was signed the February 19th 1291.
Philippe IV Beautiful the and the pope Nicolas IV wishing to prevent the domination of Aragon-Catalonia on the Sicily, but in the incapacity to beat by the weapons the resistance of Jacques II, king de Sicile, started negotiations with his/her brother Alphonse III of Aragon-Catalonia which led to the signature of the treated of Tarascon between the king of Aragon-Catalonia, on the one hand, and Charles of Salerno and the pope, other.
Alphonse engaged:
- with going itself to Rome to obtain the lifting of the excommunication of which it was the object,
- to pay with the Church a tribute of thirty ounces gold,
- to carry out a Holy Land crusade,
- to order the departure of Sicily of the Catalan and Aragonese knights to the service of his Jacques brother.
He engaged moreover so that his/her brother does not keep this kingdom against the will of the the Holy See.
One in addition advised to him to make peace with the king Sanche IV of Castille.
Papacy, for its part, cancelled the nomination of Aragon-Catalonia conceded by Martin IV with Charles de Valois and recognized the right of Jacques on Majorque.
But the death of Alphonse, hardly old twenty-seven years, who occurred little month afterwards, made null and void the clauses of this treaty, if unfavourable for the interests of Aragon-Catalonia. And it was replaced, four years later, by the Traité of Anagni, which was not a greater success.
