Treaty of Meerssen
The treated Meerssen (currently with the Netherlands) was concluded in 870 between Charles the Bald person and Louis Germanic the and devoted the division of the Lotharingie, the kingdom of their nephew Lothaire II.
Context
The Treated of Verdun, in 843 had decided division of the Carolingian Empire between three wire of Louis the Piles. The elder one, Lothaire Ier had received the Francie median which was in its turn divided with its death into 855 between its three sons Louis II, Lothaire II and Charles. Charles died in 863, his share returned to his brother Louis II.Lothaire II died in its turn in 869. His/her brother Louis II should have inherited his kingdom, but it was occupied fighting the Moslems in Bénévent (it took Bari in 871) and could not collect its heritage. His/her two uncles thus benefitted to adapt Lotharingie and signed a treaty with Meerssen from it with this intention.
In spite of its protests and the support of the pope Adrien II, Louis II does not succeed in thereafter obtaining Lotharingie. He died in 875.
In 880, by the Treated of Ribemont, the grandsons of Charles the Bald person yielded to their share of Lotharingie to Louis the Young person, wire of Louis the Germanic one, who collected all Lotharingie thus.
