Treaty of Berlin of 1878
The treated of Berlin is signed the July 13rd 1878, in fence of the Congrès of Berlin, which had brought together for one month the representatives and diplomats of several countries of Europe under the presidency of Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the German empire.
It modifies the Traité of San Stefano that the the United Kingdom and the empire Austro-Hungarian fought.
It determines in particular the fate of the Arménie, following the entry in war of the Russia vis-a-vis the Ottoman Empire in 1870, and following the Treaty of San Stefano (the March 3rd 1878). The agreements of Berlin in particular will replace the Arménie under the control of the Ottoman Empire.
This treaty also relates to the Balkans, that Russia had sought to reorganize at the time of the Treaty of San Stefano. Bosnia and Herzégovine given to Austria threw this power on broken of Russia and gave birth to in the Balkan Peninsula an antagonism which did not displease with the German policy; the Serbia, the Montenegro, the Greece increased and the principality of Bulgaria, which itself associated soon Roumélie Eastern, was created at the expense of Turkey.
Lastly, this treaty promises in Greece a frontier installation in Thessalie; it gives to the United Kingdom control Cyprus; it makes it possible Russia to preserve Kars, Ardahan and Batoumi; it ensures France and Italy the possibility of occupying the Tunisia and the Tripolitaine (Libya).
