Treaty of Arras (1435)
See also: Treated of Arras
The conference of Arras is the first European conference. In addition to the France, whose delegation is carried out by the duke of Bourbon and the marshal of Fayette, and the Burgundy, led by the duke Philippe in person, it joins together the emperor Sigismond of Luxembourg, the mediator Amédée VIII of Savoy, an English delegation, the representatives of kings de Pologne, of Castille, Aragon… By the treated of Arras , signed the September 20th 1435, the king Charles VII yields the cities of the Sum, the Comté of Mâcon and the Comté of Auxerre to Philippe the Good. Especially, it gives an independence in fact to the duchy of Burgundy. More precisely, the duke of Burgundy remains vassal of king de France but is exempted homage. In exchange, Charles VII obtains only one thing, sufficiently important to justify all these sacrifices: recognition of its title of king de France.
This treaty is famous to have put officially fine at the Civil war between Armagnacs and Burgundian.
The cities of the Sum will be repurchased by Louis XI with Philippe the Good. Charles Bold the will fight to obtain a total independence and to be able to create a kingdom of Burgundy, but it will alienate the inhabitants of Flandres, Alsace and the Swiss ones and will die without to have carried out its dream. Louis XI will benefit from it to recover half of the duchy.
