It is a complement essential with the maintenance in residence.

Approximately 300 groups are with work in Quebec, offering a tangible help to the thousands of their fellow-citizens living a situation of loss of autonomy. During the year 2004, the voluntary ones of the four corners of Quebec delivered 1 million meal. For this period, there was more than 16.000 voluntary working within the travelling cookings.

History

During the Second world war, the the United Kingdom was one of the first countries most touched by the losses of life and the damage caused by the multiple bombardments. To help the civil population to overcome the many difficulties, Womens Voluntary Service (WVS) is formed. One of its principal mandates is the organization of the food services urgently.

At the end of the hostilities, the government asks the WVS to continue its work near the prisoners and of the elder ones. Thus, in 1947, to Welwyn Garden City, in the county of Worcestershire, the first travelling cookings are delivered.

In 1954, the Cooking crosses the Atlantic by the company of a British student come to study in Philadelphia. In Quebec, thanks to the collaboration of the Victorien Order of the Nurses, the voluntary Center of Action of Montreal and several the voluntary devoted ones, the first travelling Cooking was born with the church St-Matthias, with Westmount (Montreal). The number of groups offering this invaluable service since increased considerably. There are approximately 300 in Quebec today.

With the passing of years, following the increasing demand and with the social and economic changes, the Cooking had to adapt. The major change relates to the preparation of food; a good number of organizations decided to collaborate with various suppliers for the realization of these tasks.

What remains impossible to circumvent, it is the participation of thousands of voluntary in the implementation of such a project. The latter represent the angular stone of the travelling Cookings.

Operation

The recipients of the Cooking are referred mainly by CLSC, like doctors, nurses and other speakers able to evaluate their needs.

A travelling Cooking is generally made up of a score the voluntary ones which works, in turn, in team of seven or eight: a cook, two assistant-cooks, a driver, two walkmans, two plungers.

Each area of Quebec is invested with its way in the service of the travelling Cooking, according to the needs for its customers, of the characteristics of her environment. In Montreal for example, to facilitate the delivery of the meals, Santropol, uses, be like winter, of the bicycles charged with insulating boxes. The voluntary ones of the Cooking of Chevery, on the Low-Coast-North, carry out, as for them, the delivery of the dishes in motoneige, at the time of wintry time and in VTT the summer.
