The Travellers are a Ethnic minority Irish (present also at the the United Kingdom and the the United States) Nomade, also known under the name of Tinkers , “tinkers”, of English chock , tin, because of their traditional craft industry. They were also illustrated as musicians. They have their own language, the Shelta.

Travellers have tendency to sédentariser more and more. One estimates their number at: 25000 in Ireland: 15000 in Great Britain and: 10000 with the the United States. They are often qualified riding Peuple.

Origin, language, culture

Travellers are distinguished from the other wandering communities of Ireland by their own language, and their habits. The Shelta is the traditional language of Travellers, but they speak for the majority also the English, with however a marked accent.

The historical origin of Travellers is disputed and prone to many controversies. Some think that Travellers descend themselves from another wandering people of Ireland, the Tarish. It was thought a long time that Travellers were the descendants of the private peasants of their grounds and jetés with the street during the military countryside of Cromwell in Ireland, but one now has the evidence that Travellers lived quite front Ireland, at least since the Moyen-âge.

Several groups of Travellers resident in the United States, and include/understand Travellers of the south and north of the United States (each one of these two groups having themselves their subcategories), but the Shelta language dies slowly: only oldest know it completely now.

According to certain habits, at least in Travellers of the south of the USA (Memphis, Georgia), authorize the marriage of 11 year old young girls to some 20 year old men and more. The marriages occur in general towards the age from 12 or 13 years, with a cousin with the first or second degree in general. As in the culture of Travellers, it is the man who provides for the needs for the family, the objective of the girls being to marry. The parents of the bride pay a Dot with the groom, who can be sometimes rather important.

Problems of racism

They are often victims of ostracism, in particular because of the problems caused by the police force, of their bad reputation and their difficult report/ratio to the authorities.

They are often shown of flight, of aggressions. In English, broad numbers of pejorative names are dedicated to them, in particular that of “gipsy”.

They are called themselves Pavees.

The Horse

Travellers are a riding Peuple. The horse, that it is to be gone up or to draw roulottes, is very important. Thus the word “Tinker” gave its name to the horse “Tinker”, a semi-heavy animal, often of dress Pie, also called Irish Cob, largely used by these nomads. The horses tinkers constitute a point of friction between Travellers and the authorities: the horses are in general left free, in herd, and wander close to the roads, causing many accidents.

In the fiction

One sees them in the Horse come from the sea , an Irish film of 1992 where the two main characters are sedentarized children of Travellers. This film poses the problem of poverty of the tinkers, and their often lived sedentarisation with difficulty, in the poor suburbs of the Irish Agglomération S.
