Traunstein is a German city which is between Munich ( München ) and Salzburg ( Salzburg ) in High-Bavaria. It is located at the foot of the the Alps, with 15 km of the lake Chiemsee, on the river “Traun”. Another lake known in the area is the Königssee.
Traunstein counts approximately 18 000 inhabitants. Contrary to Rosenheim, Traunstein is a town of administration. It shelters for example the Amtsgericht and the Landgericht , of the very important courts of justice for the area.
Even if the ecclesiastical documents officieles mention already around 790 of the possessions " AD Trun" and in spite of the existence of the remports to the Middle Ages close to Traunstein, Trauwenstein even is documented first time in 1245 in a writing of the Baumburg monastery. The name signife “castle in Traun” and the seat of the Lords of Truna is here, surrounded by a small village. The first to increase this village are Wittelsbacher, they reinforced it and they controlled the bridge on Traun, which is an important road of the salt of Reichenhall to Munich. In 1120 Seigneus of " von Truna" settled where is the town of today. The plate as of the city which is surrounded of Traun is of a great strategic importance and economic. The production of salt, following the construction of a conduit of brine since Bad Reichenhall in 1616, was for a long time the most important economic activity of the city and a great ease brought to him.
Traunstein was almost not touched by the atrocities of the 30 year old war (1618-1648).
Because of the seizure of power of the national-Socialists, the dissidents and the Jews see themselves continued like elsewhere in Germany since 1933. During the second world war, Traunstein was four times the goal of the American bombardments: November 11th, 1944, on January 21st, 1945, on April 18th, 1945 and the last time on April 25th, 1945. The city was delivered to the Americans without combat on May 3rd, 1945. The communal election in January 1946 is a first step towards the democracy. Refugees must be neat and integrated.
From 1876 to 1935, then of 1948 to 1972, Traunstein was a “kreisfreie Stadt” ( independent city ). During the “Gebietsreform” ( reorganization of the areas in 1972 ) Traunstein was reinstated in Landkreis Traunstein and obtained the statute of “Große Kreisstadt” (sub-prefecture). After the communes Hochberg (1972), Kammer (1972), Haslach (1978) and Wolkersdorf (1978) were integrated into the Traunstein commune.
The first fire took place in 1371. A negligence was the cause: a waitress poured a little hot ash beside a boiler and fire took very quickly. The old town of Traunstein was almost completely destroyed, just as the church.
In 1704, Traunstein burned for the second time whereas the Bavarian ones fought against the Austrians to gain Spain. The Austrians gained the war and Bavaria was occupied. An Austrian general broke out in Traunstein. Because of this event, he was assassinated by young combatants. The Austrians were avenged and they put fire at the city. All the city was the prey of the flames.
Approximately 150 years ago, in 1851, that Traunstein burned for the last time. Until 1851 Traunstein belonged to the parish of Haslach. After, Traunstein separated from the old parish. People of Haslach are reflected in anger and in the night from April 25th to 26th, the third fire burst. 20.000 people lost their houses. It is not known if people of Haslach put fire at Traunstein. But perhaps that it was their revenge. One speculated much in the cause of the fire, one initially supposed an act of revenge on Haslachers in anger. Later rumors were answered which said that the negligence of a messenger started the fire, but one forever been able to prove these speculations. About 700 citizens were without shelter at the beginning, but the city obtained many assistance everywhere. King Maximilian already visited Traunstein on April 27th, it gave consolation and it gave several thousands of guilders of its case of the cabinet. This payment of the end of the Middle Ages was always present when in the night of the 25 to the 26 april 1851 Traunstein became victim of an immense fire, which almost destroyed the appearance of the city. 90 houses and 30 buildings in the downtown area became victims of fire only the building. who is today the <

In Traunstein, there are various cultural offers: in addition to the monuments, one can visit museums, go to the cinema, the theater and concerts or leave the evening. Of course, Traunstein offers also sports events. For example one can make climbing, excursions, ski or bicycle any ground. Several lakes close to the city invite you to make bathes. For the sportsmen, there exist several centers of sport (equestrian, biathlon, ice-skating etc)

An important cultural place is “Nuts - die Kulturfabrik” (Nuts - the cultural factory). The visitor can look at plays or cabarets, or hear various concerts. The foundation of this institution goes back to 1994 and the program is addressed to an audience young or remained young.

For the film enthusiasts, there are two cinemas with Traunstein. First is located directly at the station, the second a little apart from Traunstein, in Haslach (industrial park).
There are also museums, for example the gallery of the city, the museum of the cats or the Heimathaus (regional historical museum), and exposures which often vary. On the Web site of Traunstein, one can have an overall idea of the current events.
For the sportsmen, there are many possibilities: a swimming pool, a rock of climbing, much of clubs of sport, hiking trails, cycle tracks, etc

Churches
Church St Oswald. The church of ordination of the pope Benoit XVI. There are two parishes Roman-catholics: St Oswald and Heilig Kreuz. Moreover there exists also a Protestant parish (Auferstehungskirche). Many churches of Traunstein are used currently only seldom and/or for other goals. The old abbey church serves as eel in concert and showroom for regional artists. The church “St Georg and Katharina” in the city park is not used any more but in the summer months. “Ettendorfer Kircherl” is on a small hill on the city. One can from time to time visit there services or rent it for marriages and baptisms. In Haslach, a district of Traunstein, there is still another catholic parish. Moreover there still exists of other religious communities.
