The Trarza (in Arabic: ولايةالترارزة) is an area of the South-west of the Mauritania, one of the 13 Wilaya S which the country comprises.

History

Geography

Its areas bordering are the Inchiri and the Adrar in North and the Brakna in the East. In the South the border with the Senegal is, in the West the Atlantic Ocean. The capital Nouakchott is wedged there.

Its surface is of 67.800 km ², its population was estimated at 206.800 inhabitants in 1996, it was of 268.220 inhabitants (census of 2000). The density is of 3,96 hab. /km ².

Its capital is Rosso and the other significant cities are Mederdrá and Boutilimit.

  • Boutilimit
  • Keur Massene
  • Mederdrá
  • Ouad Naga
  • R'kiz
  • Rosso

Climate and vegetation

70% of the surface of Trarza are subjected to a desert Climat, while 30% only profit from a climate saharo-sahélien.

In the affected areas by the Turning into a desert, the woody vegetation disappears little by little. The species having best resisted are the Euphorbe S ( Euphorbia will balsamifera ), the Balanite S ( Balanites aegyptiaca ) and the Asclépiadacée S ( Leptadenia pyrotechnica ), as well as the Tamaris ( Tamarix senegalensis ) on the Atlantic facade.

Economy

The populations of Trarza live mainly trade, agriculture, fishing and breeding.
