Transport of dangerous matters

The transport of dangerous matters (TMD) can be carried out by road , shoed, maritime or air way . It east governs by international texts fixing the rules of this transport.

Regulation

Road transport

In Europe, the transport of dangerous matters is framed by the European Accord relating to the international transport of the dangereous goods because of road called also ADR ( has greement for the international carriage off D angerous goods by R oad ). Written the September 30th 1957 and come into effect the January 29th 1968, it was renovated on July 1st 2001.

Rail-bound transport

As regards international transport, in fact the RID is in force in Europe.

Air transport

International air transport is governed by the rule IATA as well as the rule relatievs with the transport of dangerous matters of ICAO.

Maritime transport and river

The rules of maritime transport are fixed by the maritime International dangerous goods code ( IMDG )

The international river transport is regulated by a text entitled DNA (European Agreement relating to the international transport of the Dangereuses goods by way of Inland navigation).

This text can be followed by a letter according to paricularities of the way concerned:

  • the letter " R" was added for " Rhin"
  • the letter " D" was added for the " Danube"

Regulation in France

For transport by railway , the statutory text is RTMDF (Payment of transport of dangereous matters because of way of railroad) come into effect the 1erjuillet 1993 and modified in 1994 and 1995.

For the maritime transport , France lays out in addition to the IMDG of the RPM, payment of the seaports (stopped June 27th 1951).

Road transport in France

In France, the ADR came into force on January 1st 1997 for transport by road way .

Marking and descriptive

The packing of the transported dangerous matter (Coach, tank of Heavy truck, etc) must present different descriptive of which the plates codes dangers and the plates symbols danger.

These plates must be visible on the front one, the back and each side of the container.

Plates codes dangers

They are orange and measure 30×40 cm. They are divided into two parts in the direction of the width. They comprise identification numbers (cf below), or can be virgin if the container transports several hazardous substances.

In the upper part the code danger is, to two or three digits, sometimes preceded by a letter, which indicates the nature of the danger presented. The first figure represents the principal danger, there is always a second figure representing the secondary danger (0 if there is only one danger). A third figure can, if necessary, announce a subsidiary danger.

The presence of letter X front the figures represents a danger of violent reactions in contact with water ( Eau, doped water, foam of extinction, etc).
