Transport in Yonne

The Département of Yonne from its geographical location in the middle of Europe has powerful and effective transport infrastructures.

Road transport

The network viaire is dense in the Yonne. A highway grid of trunk roads, secondary road and make it possible today the department to thus have:

  • 4.800 km of departmental roadway systems

  • 317 km of national roadway systems: N6, N77, N81, N151
  • 185 km of highway: A5, A6, A19, A26, A38

All road infrastructures make it possible the Yonne to be a true node and important crossing point in the NORTH-SOUTH connections of the Europe.

Rail-bound transports

The railway activity was always an essential link in the territorial organization of Yonne in particular with the rail link PLM. The Station of Laroche-Migennes, amongst other things, was in first half of the 20th century an important railway center in France. Although being sulky capital departmental Auxerre (even if the Gare of Auxerre-Saint-Gervais is connected to the network PLM via Laroche-Migennes), the whole of the important cities (except Avallon) of Yonne has a SNCF railway station on the Paris-Lyon network. The station of Direction by its proximity with the Paris region at less than one hour, functions primarily with the pendular connections between Paris and the area sénonaise.

In addition, the installation of LGV in France in 1981 between Paris and Lyon cross Yonne on the level of the town of Saint-Florentin. Although not having station TGV, a TGV Yonne between Melun and Marseilles allow from now on a service road of Lyon, Marseilles even Montpellier largely improved.

Air transports

The flying activity is strongly limited, on the one hand by demography and on the other hand by the proximity of Paris. There exists well the Aéroport of Auxerre - Branches but its marketing activity is practically null.

River transport

The river activity, which was a long time an essential component in the economy and transport of Yonne, is not limited today than with the only tourist activity, than it is on the Canal of Burgundy, the Canal of the Resident of Nevers, the Yonne or the Armançon.

So today the Yonne knows a demographic dynamism (in particular the north of the department) it is by the effectiveness of an effective grid system even if the geographical position of Yonne between Paris and Lyon, in the center of the Europe would show the possibility for more important possibilities.
