Airport S international of Croatia:

The Airport of Osijek (AITA: OSI ) (20 km in the south-east of Osijek) was renovated to accommodate the regional connections.

The following companies low-cost currently have regular connections with Croatia: Germanwings, Hapag-Lloyd Express train, SkyEurope Airlines, Wizz Air, EasyJet and Ryanair.

Seasonal flights (during the summer) are proposed by: Aeroflight, GB Airways, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Air One, Styrian Airways and TUI. Since the summer 2006, Fly Globespan proposes flights of Pula to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Wizz Air introduces from 2006 of the seasonal flights between Budapest and Split.

The principal traditional airline companies are Croatia Airlines (member of the Star Alliance), Lufthansa and British Airways.

The airport of Pleso to Zagreb will be entirely renovated in 2006. An investment from 150 to 180 million euros is designed to build a new terminal.

Road transport

Economic context

The Croatian Autoroute S are among most modern and surest of Europe, primarily because they all were practically built after independence. The country knows a fever of the highways, because during the twenty years preceding independence, at the time of the communist Yugoslavia, no project was concluded. The cause goes up with the Croatian Printemps of it, when was born the dream to connect both plus Croatian big cities, Zagreb and Split, by a highway. The realization of this project at the time was constantly pushed back by the Communist party. The construction of highways is in Croatia a symbol of unit, economic growth and solidarity, and is thus carried out beating drum.

The Investissement S in the highway infrastructures are a priority today, which is not surprising if one considers their strategic importance for Croatia. The need for the investments is all the more manifest as they are determining for the development of the country and its areas, and in particular for the development of its economic main activities. The Croatian ministry for transport also underlines that the construction of the highways created of employment and contributes to the Increase in population Croatian. The creation of a modern Croatian highway network of course has a positive effect for all, by allowing the transit by the corridors of paneuropéens transport. The persons in charge underline inter alia the creation of highways eliminates the bottlenecks from the grid system, and that thus the road safety increases while gaining over times of ways. The ports also benefit from this policy which revitalizes them.

The Tourisme has a great place in the Croatian economy. Many tourists come to Croatia with their own vehicles. For this reason, and to stimulate the economic growth of the country, the highways became a need for the sustainable development of Croatia. The country has already a sizeable density of highways for a state which must always fight the continuations of the Communisme and war of independence. Safety has much importance in Croatia. In 2004 effect a law of road transport took very discussed, envisaging drastic measurements against alcohol at the wheel (0 G per liter of blood) and the dangerous drivings. Moreover, all new the Tunnel S Croatian must respect strict security measures and have a Vidéosurveillance, and modern control centers truck driver must be built.

A1, centers North-South major

380 km of the Highway of A1 Zagreb - Split (also named the Dalmatina ) is the headlight project of the current Croatian government. It is entirely open since June 26th 2005, offering twice two ways everywhere, except 2 tunnels where the opening of the second galleries will take place when circulation justifies it. A1 connects the continental part of Mediterranean Croatia to Dalmatie. Most important Work of art is the Tunnel of Sveti Rok (5.687  m) through the solid mass of Velebit, which makes communicate two climatic zones: continental climate of central Croatia and Mediterranean climate of the Dalmatie. Most modern and longer Croatian tunnel is also on A1. It is about the tunnel crossing the assembly line of Mala Kapela (5.780  m).

The highway curves between the Croatian hills, offering panoramic sights, skirts the Dalmatian coast while passing close to famous the National park of Krka. A rest area makes it possible to have a remarkable sight of it. The construction of the next section in direction of the important Dalmatian port of Ploče began in 2005, its end is planned for 2008. The Southern connection towards Dubrovnik and the border of the Montenegro remain it with the state of project. The years 2005/2006 saw the construction of many station gasoline and rest areas along the Croatian highways.

Other highway axes

In the next years, all the connections towards North (Slovenia) will be carried out by highways. Since June 2005 there are highways between the Slovenien border close to Umag in direction of Rovinj, and between the point border of Rupa towards Rijeka. The connection between Zagreb, Krapina and the border with Macelj, in the south of Maribor, should be completed in May 2007. The western branches and is Y istrien (fast tracks of the Istrie) are opened with circulation since the beginning of June 2005. The last part reaching Pula was completed in 2006. One already projects to equip these fast tracks to make highways of them.

The last section of a6 highway between Rijeka and Zagreb is in service since spring 2004. will have however to be awaited 2008 so that it is entirely equipped in double tracks. In the next years will be born also a great skirting from Rijeka (the second skirting) and the connection between Rijeka, Senj and Žuta Lokva to join A1. Part of the highway between Zagreb and the industrial town of Sisak must be completed in 2008.

In the next years, all the areas of Croatia should profit from comfortable highway accesses. One can quote the connection between Županja (Is Slavonie) and the Serbia, as well as the construction of the corridor paneuropéen 5C between the Hungarian border with Beli Manastir, Osijek and the border with the Bosnia-Herzégovine in direction of Sarajevo and further to the port of Ploče.

Remarkable tunnels and bridges

Important projects of Tunnel S and bridges are programmed in South-Dalmatie. Among those one counts the tunnel of Biokovo close to Makarska on A1, and the longest bridge of Croatia between Komarna, over the channel of the Neretva, leading on the peninsula of Pelješac (2.374 m length, 30 m headroom for the sea, fine traffic of work envisaged in 2009). Work of this bridge began in November 2005. The cost envisaged reached 300 million euros. The bridge will make it possible to avoid a passage of 10 km in the territory bosnien, by Neum, and will thus connect for the first time the South-Dalmatie to the remainder of Croatia. The direct passage towards the peninsula of Pelješac will shorten also the way towards the islands of Korčula and Lastovo of 32 km.
