Transgenre

Transgenre is a Néologisme French reflecting an evolutionary terminology to describe the people whose kind - psychic and social identity connected to the concepts of man and woman - returns in conflict with the kind that the company assigns to them as from their physical Sexe.

The word appeared in first with the Quebec where the transgenre Micheline Montreuil popularized it largely as well in front of the courts as in the media. The weather thereafter was its appearance in France especially among the community transgenre. It would have appeared as a copy of the English word transgender, after one had started to use the word “kind” to translate the concept which sexology and sociology return by gender in English language.

These turnings (“kind” and “transgenre”) are devoted always little in the use of the every day; their precise definition is always in a state of fluidity. However, in Quebec at least, they are widespread among the community transgenre and the social services dealing with this community, and start to be established in the academic disciplines.

Meanings

The term transgenre is used in a widened direction and a restricted direction.

In its broadest direction, the word transgenre gathers several identity expressions in which the person considers that the kind allotted to its birth, according to the Genitals, is a false or incomplete description of itself.

With the restricted direction, transgenre indicates one of these identity expressions.

Principle of definition

Concerned with identity expressions, the definition of the term transgenre can be done only in reference to these expressions, which they take the form of statements or practices. Those being very varied and evolutionary one cannot claim to enumerate them all nor to give a fixed definition of it. The identities presented hereafter, like concerning the identities transgenres , are thus necessarily diagrammatic reference marks .

Identities Transsexuals

The people asserting or affirming an identity transsexual express the major feeling to be a woman or a man contrary to the identity associated with its genitals (the Dysphorie of kind). The person can or not have recourse to hormonal or surgical treatments aiming at putting in harmony her body and her identity. Although in many countries the state of Transsexualisme is recognized only with people having had recourse to a hormonal and surgical treatment, this design is disputed by many individuals and associations of assistance to the people transsexuals. These last estimate that it does not rest on an administrative authority to issue which interventions on the body of a person are necessary to the setting in harmony of its body and its identity. They refute the concepts of complete” or “partial” course “sometimes employed to describe the interventions from which a person given wishes to profit.

All the people transsexuals do not affirm a identity transsexual . They consider that their state of transsexualism rises from the error of assignment made to their birth and ends when they arrive at the end of their transition. They can then live in harmony, in their identity of always, male or female.

Identities Disguised

The people expressing an identity travestiE, do not live in a conflict way the kind which was allotted to them to their birth. They however test the need (often irrepressible) to wear the clothing and other distinctive signs considered socially as being inappropriate for their sex. They consider that the share of themselves that they express through this practice is constitutive of their major personality.

All the people having practices of Travestissement do not assert a disguised identity.

Transgenres identities

The people affirming of the identities transgenres express the major feeling that their “kind” is different from that which the company assigns to them, according to their physical sex. These identities transgenres can take several forms: membership of a third kind, membership of two or several kinds, membership of any kind, mobile identity and jamming of the borders (Queer), etc These people are often defined as transgenres , not with the general direction describes in this article but in the particular direction not to be identified exclusively in one of the socially recognized kinds.

Limits and discussions

These sub-groups are only approximations unsuitable giving an account of the extreme diversity of the identities in conflict with the dominant social norms of assignment of the kinds. Moreover, they mix to the identities people, the course and the practices which they borrow to live harmoniously their identities.

In spite of these limits, an approach by the identities offers the advantage of clearly stating that of which she intends to return account. It is distinguished in that from allegedly scientific approaches which dissimulate their a priori normative behind false objective categories (stigmatizing and/or pathologisantes): transsexualism, Transgendérisme, Travestisme. Indeed, to categorize the people following of the registers of practices or action only return us a priori with which these categories are made up, since this classification makes the dead end on the reasons which justify these practices and the significances that the subjects attach to them.

It does not rest on an approach by the identities to segment nor to dissolve the sub-groups such as they seem to be constituted at a given time. It would be quite as incongruous to want to measure the “distance” between two people, of which one, under hormonal treatment, would assert an identity MtF transsexual would not wish to profit from a Chirurgie of sexual reassignation and the other would assert an identity transgenre and would have profited from implants mammaires. In the same way, to claim to order “sub-groups” (tranvestiE-occasionnelLE - > transgenre - > transsexual-hormonéE-operate-state-civilian) - and thus to treat on a hierarchical basis them - is, altogether, only one exaggerated attempt to classify the people in accordance with the dominant, bipolar standard and moralist, who governs the assignment of the kinds.

Use

The use of the transgenre term is variable within the communities transgenres. Certain people transsexuals do not regard themselves as being transgenres, that is to say because they are not considered “transgressive” from the point of view of the identity of kind since they are identified clearly with one or the other kind; maybe because they fear that their identity and the problems which are particular for them are diluted in the diversity of situations described by the word “transgenre”. A contrario , other people transsexuals asserts name transgenre and challenges the term transsexual , asserting which it puts the accent on the sex whereas they estimate victims of an error of assignment of kind. Lastly, other people transsexuals challenge the alleging transgenre term that they do not change a kind into changing sex since their real kind always was on the other hand with that which one assigned to them with their birth.

Almost without exception, the people transgenres prefer being named according to the kind with which they are identified or under which they are presented. Thus, a person who saw herself allotting the male kind to the birth, but which is identified as being a woman, will prefer the use of the pronouns and the feminine adjectives; to describe its sexual orientation, it will employ the vocabulary of its kind: hétérosexuelle if it is attracted only by the men, lesbian if it is attracted only by the women and bisexual if it attracted by both. For a person transgenre not transsexual, the concepts usually employed to describe the sexual orientation prove to be inoperative, questioning their universality consequently. Thus, a person multi-kind, whose kind of assignment is male, but living socially in a way balanced between several kinds, can it be described as hétérosexuelle if it is exclusively attracted by the women?

Let us recall that the transgenderism does not appear to be connected to the sexual orientation; people of various sexual orientations are identified as being transgenres.
