Tram of Versailles

The Trams of Versailles or Tramways Of Versailles are an old network of Tramway to normal way which served the town of Versailles in the department of the Yvelines (France) of 1876 to 1957.

The network

The first lines, with horse-drawn Traction, opened in 1876 and connected:
  • the Duplessis public garden in Grandchamp,
  • the station Right Bank with the Senate (Opera of the castle),
  • the station Left bank with the House of Commons (Wing of the South of the castle).

The first modernization was the opening on November 20th, 1889 of a tram line with vapor connecting Saint-Cyr-the School to Versailles. The second modernization came in October 1895 during the recovery from the network by the SVTE (Société Of Versailles of electric Trams) which electrified the network and ordered 29 electric motor coaches with the workshops Postel-Vinay.

The network passed from three to six lines and served:

  • line a: Glatigny - Grandchamp
  • line b: Clagny - Orangery
  • line C: Chesnay - station of the Building sites
  • line D: Public garden Jean Houdon - Montreuil
  • line E: station Right Bank - Trianon (grid of the Capuchins),
  • line F: station Left bank - Saint-Cyr-the School

In 1907, the line C was seen prolonged until Porchefontaine and the line D to Republic.

During the Années 1950 the network was not formed that lines has, B, C and E. the network was amputee the day before the Second world war and closed the March 3rd 1957. This day there was organized a great ceremony gathering 200.000 inhabitants, chaired by the mayor of Versailles in the presence of Maurice Chevalier, for the baptism of the buses of replacement.

Rolling stock

  • cars with horse-drawn traction.
  • 29 electric motor coaches Postel-Vinay (1896), transformed into 1922 and renumbered 1 to 9. Painted in yellow and white with the open platforms of end. The motor coaches were driven by a wattman while a receiver undertook the tickets, the pole and shuntings. The motor coaches were modernized after the First World War with the closing of the platforms and the replacement of the engines by more powerful.
  • 2 motor coaches cards with imperial (1908).
  • 4 motor coaches great capacity (1927), numbered 53 to 56 and able to receive 55 passengers sitted.
  • 1 motor coach modern Satramo (1930).
  • transformation of 11 motor coaches Postel-Vinay (in 1933), numbered 10 to 20.
The trams were repainted in the Forties in blue and clear gray.
