Trakai

Trakai (in Polish Troki or Nowe Troki ) is a small town of Lithuania. It is located at 28 km in the west of Vilnius.

The city counts 5.500 inhabitants out of 11,5 km ². The area of Trakai covers 1.203 km ² inhabited by 38.000 inhabitants. The area includes/understands approximately 200 lakes.

Trakai was at the 13th century the second capital of Lithuania, after Kernavė. The city was then a military, administrative and economic center for the country. When towards 1323 Vilnius became capital, Trakai remained the residence of pageantry of the large-dukes until the middle of the 15th century. Those received the ambassadors and the sovereigns foreign, impressed by the beauty of the site and the high towers of the brick castle.

Two castles were in the city: the castle of the peninsula, which is not restored yet and that Gothic and gigantic on an island of the Lac of Galvė. In the middle of the 20th century, the castle of the lake was rebuilt. Today, it is the center of attraction of the town of Trakai.

A museum is currently installed in the castle and, in summer, the theater of the opera ballet gives representations to it.

The Lithuanians cotoient here Polish and Russian S. the city is known for its small community karaïte. The karaïtes in the city since the beginning of the 15th century, are engaged by the Vytautas large-duke for the guard of the fortress. One finds there a house of prayers karaïte, a museum on their culture and a restaurant karaïte. One of the most famous representatives of this community was Isaac de Troki.
