Training of the veterinary surgeons in France
In France, the training of the veterinary surgeons is ensured by four specialized universities, the National schools veterinary surgeons (Alfort, Lyon, Nantes, Toulouse) accessible by contest after two years from Preparatory class. The studies, one seven years duration (including 2 years of preparatory classes), are sanctioned by a thesis of exercise supported in a UFR of medicine and giving right under veterinary surgeon.
History
The school veterinary surgeon of Lyon, created by Claude Bourgelat, which was its first director, and inaugurated the January 10th 1762 is the first open educational establishment of the veterinary medicine in Europe. Louis XV gave him in 1764 the title of “royal School veterinary surgeon”. It is also Bourgelat which created the school veterinary surgeon d' Alfort (the Valley-of-Marne) in 1766; it published the veterinary art in 1761 is regarded as the founder of the scientific Veterinary medicine in France and even on a world level.
Following the reform of the studies resulting from the decree of January 15th 1813, the artist-veterinary surgeons take a new title:
- doctor-veterinary surgeon if they leave the school of Alfort regarded as school of first class (five years of studies);
- marshal-veterinary surgeon if they leave the school of Lyon regarded as school of second class (three years of studies).
The title of artist-veterinary surgeon was then reserved for the marshal-shoeing and the postmaster having obtained an approval on the level of the department by the Préfet.
Starting from the ordinance of September 1st 1825, the situation is unified with a diploma for the occupation of veterinary surgeon associated with four years with study.
Text of the oath of Bourgelat
Always imbus of the principles of honesty which they will have drawn and whose they will have seen examples in the Schools, they will never deviate any. They will distinguish the poor one from the rich person. They will not put at a too high price of the talents which they will owe only with the benevolence and the generosity of their fatherland. Lastly, they will prove by their control that they all are also convinced that fortune consists less in although one has that in that which one can do.
I promise and I swear in front of the Council about the Veterinary surgeons to conform my professional control to the rules prescribed by the code of conduct and to observe of them in any circumstance the principles of correction and uprightness.
I constantly make the oath have and in any place the constant worry of the dignity and the veterinary honor of the profession.
