The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is the federator organization of the British trade unions . Its 71 members represent approximately 7 million members.
The principal authority of decision of the TUC is its annual convention, in September. In the interval, the decisions are made by the general advice (General Council), which meets every two months. An executive committee (Executive Committee) is elected by the council among its members. The TUC is directed by a general secretary, who is since 2003 Brendan Barber.
The Sheffield Trades Council, founded in 1871 in this old bastion of the Iron and steel industry, is always active today; the work conditions and the duration of the work explain its birth and its development. In the Sixties, confrontations violent one; said Sheffield Insults, took place there.
The general secretary is the permanent chief of the TUC. He is the person to which the population identifies the TUC. The general secretary is responsible for animation and control for the TUC between annual convention, in the respect of the orientations fixed by the congress and the general advice (General Council). He represents the TUC so much in his public expression than in the relations with the other organizations.
This function was created in 1921, when the parliamentary committee of the TUC became the general advice . It is a full-time established post since 1904, without limited duration. The secretary was elected before annually by the congress.
