In Botanical, the Compagnonnage is a technique of Horticulture consisting in associating, within same cultures, the plants which one wishes to cultivate with certain plants having a repulsive or toxic action on specific insects and/or bad grasses.

The trade-guild was practiced mainly before the invention of the chemical Pesticide S but it has been again used for a few years within the framework of the reasoned Agriculture, the Organic farming and the biological Jardinage.

Modes of action

Certain plants are consumed by Parasite S and poison them. Others, like the aromatic Plants, diffuse odors masking the odor of the plants appreciated by the parasites and make them thus untraceable. Others still, like the Mustard or the Large nasturtium, are used of soft foods or lures with the insects in order to move away them from the crop plants. In this case, when the " plant piège" is covered with parasites, one treats only it and one thus eliminates the unit from the associated parasites.

Examples of trade-guild

by intoxication

  • the Solanum nigrum, the common Ricinus and the Datura stramonium attract the Doryphore S and poison them (but these plants have the disadvantage of being also toxic for the man).
  • the Pyrèthre S and some Chrysanthème S contain Pyréthrine, a powerful insecticide.

by inhibition

  • the roots of French marigold eliminate the Nématode S, those of the wormwood inhibit the growth of the bad grasses

by attraction or repulsion

  • the Dill, the Fennel, the asclépiade, the Tanaisie move away the Puceron S and the red spiders. The officinal Rue pushes back the plant louses.
  • the Radis move away the Mineuse S from the Vigne S

  • the Armoise is repulsive moving away Souris, Rongeurs, Escargot S and Limace S.

  • the Mint S or the Lavande constitute excellent repulsive for the Fourmi S and thus also for the Puceron S (" élevés" by the ants). Mint attracts also several beneficial species of Mouche S. The peppered Menthe (mentha X piperita) is the best variety to be used because of its very strong odor.

  • To alternate a row of Leek and a row of Carrot. The carrot drives out the Teigne of the leek and the leek drives out the Mouche of the carrot.

Allium

The species of the family Allium (Garlic, chive, shallot, Onion, etc) have very effective repulsive properties to push back the insects.
  • the chive moves away the insects climbing from the Fruit trees and protects them from the Tavelure, the Gale and the Chancre S.

  • garlic or the onion planted with the feet of the Pêcher S makes it possible to protect them from the blister.

The desiccated garlic powder protects seeds and starts-up from the birds and the insects.
