Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

The clementine is a Agrume. It is the fruit of the clémentinier, a tree of the family of the Rutacées.

Origin

It owes its name with the Reverend Père Clement (Vincent Rodier 1829 - 1904) which was director of culture of the orphanage of Misserghin (close to Oran in Algérie). In 1892, it would voluntarily have according to the sources either cross a Mandarinier with another citrus fruits, or simply found this new fruit appeared naturally. At all events, the Father Clement being at the origin of discovered of this new type of fruit, the of Algiers company of agriculture decided to name it " clémentine" in its honor.

The first descriptions of the clémentinier are due to professors Trabut and Brichet which published them in 1902 in the Revue horticultural Frenchwoman and in 1926 in the agricultural Bulletin of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco . To note that the practical Treated of agriculture for the north of Africa , published in 1929, does not speak about clementine but only about “tangerine without pip”.

The clementine was initially regarded as a Hybride between the Mandarinier ( Citrus deliciosa Ten.) and a variety of Bigaradier to sheet of willow ( Citrus salicifolia Raf. “Terrazzo”). This last had been imported of Spain like Porte-greffe for the citrus fruits cultures. However recent studies undertaken by the station Corsica INRA of San-Giuliano in devoted to citrus fruit cultivation, showed starting from the analysis of the Chromosome S which it was acted in fact of an hybrid between the mandarin tree and the sweet orange ( Citrus sinensis ).

Characteristics

The clementine is practically a fruit without pip (seedless), so its multiplication is done primarily by grafting, all the clémentiniers being thus clones. Nevertheless, one noted changes of which some were the subject of multiplication for the culture, and thus with the existence of different varieties.

Even if its flesh is slightly less scented, the clementine takes more and more the place of the Mandarine because it does not have pips (it is a sterile Hybride) and its weeding is easier.

A clementine is generally divided into ten districts. A district is sometimes called a thigh.

Its skin is fine of reddish orange color, nonadherent. Its juicy and acidulous flesh one of softest and is sweetened citrus fruits. This fruit is thus mainly consumed natural.

The clémentinier ( Citrus clementina ) is a shrub from 4 to 6 meters with sheets and very scented flowers.

Culture

The clementine is mainly cultivated in Spain, Tunisia and with the Morocco. In France, only the Corsica in product, under label IGP.

Another scientific name: Citrus reticulata “Clementine”
