Trabzon
Trabzon (or in French Trapézonte , in the past named Trébizonde , in antiquity Τραπεζους , Greek word to connect with trapeza , “the table”, because of the shape of the mountain close to the city) is a town of Turkey, Préfecture of the Province of the same name, located at the edge of the Black Sea. Initially capital of the Greek Empire of Trébizonde, it becomes after its conquest by the Turks, the capital of the sancak (Sous-préfecture in Turkish) of the Lazistan . The city has a culture rather different from the remainder of Turkey thanks to its history rich in kingdoms and empires with the different populations.
History
Founded with the O C by colonists originating in Millet, perhaps by colonists of Sinope, (Sinop in Turkish) towards - 700, the city knows in turn periods Roman and Byzantine. After the catch of Constantinople by the Cross in 1204, Alexis Comnène flees with the imperial family with Trabzon and founds a dynasty of princes which will reign on the city and its area. Thus Trabzon becomes capital Byzantine Empire, famous Greek Empire of Trébizonde. Overcome in 1461 by the Othoman sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, the city knows from now on the domination of the Othoman , before seeing being born the sultan Soliman the Magnificent the. According to certain studies, there would be still nowadays close to 300 000 hellénophones (of Islamic religion) in the area (see the article Pontiques ), as well as many Caucasian populations (Lazes, Géorgiens and Circassiens), having been driven out the Caucasus by the Russia tsarist. It is around this city that Xénophon and its Ten Thousand saw the sea for the first time following their retirement of the Persian empire.The priest Catholique Italian Andrea Santoro was assassinated there on February 5th, 2006.
