The Trévires or Trevériens are one of the Celtic people.
Gallic people of the Gaulle Belgium whose vast territory extended on part of Belgian Luxembourg, the Grand-Duché of Luxembourg, and the German Low-Moselle. Their king Indutiomare led the hard life to Jules César during several years and they were subjected only in 52 av. J. - C. But, during one century still, they revolted sporadically.
César qualified them the German ones. Was this because of their braies (pants), or because of their language? It seems that with the IIIe and 4th centuries the Common language, at least in their capital Augusta Treverorum (Trier in French, Trier , in German) was a speech Gaulois. In this direction, Saint Jerome testifies, “in its Commentaire of the Epistle to Gallates , that Trévires speak the same language as the Galates about Asia Mineure descendants of Gaulois of the Celtic one, survivors of the forwarding of Brennus to Delphes” (Jean Markale, “the Celtic woman”, Petite Payot Library, Paris, 1989, p.53).
At that time also, Trier became, following the reform of the emperor Dioclétien, the capital of sound césar , assistant emperor called to succeed to him the head of the Western part of the Roman Empire. One of Césars following Constantin I {{er}} resided several years at Trier.
At the time Roman, Trévires were very good farmers: they had developed a reaping-machine pushed by an ass, represented on a low-relief and that archeologists could rebuild and make function in the Années 1950. This low-relief being the single testimony of this agricultural machine, it must not have a great diffusion. Trévires were in addition famous for their breedings of horses.
