History

Foundation

The " Valley Trécor" enter the history in 535 with the Welsh monk Tugdual which founds a monastery there.

Thus Tréguier will be an obliged stage of the Tro Breizh , pilgrimage with the seven saints Breton founders.

''' Tugdual ''' is devoted bishop of Landreger towards 542. Of its existence, we actually know only few things, even not the exact date of its death which has occurred one November 30th into 553,559 or 564. He would be the son of Alma Pompa (holy Pompée) and of Hoel Ier, 8th king d' Armorique. Originating in Great Britain, Tugdual would have emigrated in Armorique accompanied by his/her mother.

It seems that around its monastery an important agglomeration was quickly constituted.

The church, probably of wood, did not leave any trace; it is supposed that it was located about at the same site as the current cathedral.

In 848, Nominoë, king de Bretagne, made this évêché-abbey one évêché secular.

Little time after occurs the first invasions Normans ordered by Hastings. Tréguier will be destroyed, given up by the population.

On its site only brambles and ivy pushed when certain Gratien undertakes to raise the cathedral (970).

This building will be dedicated to Tugdual saint. There us remains about it a tower called, one does not know too much why, Hasting turn.

The Middle Ages

The city is named Saint Pabu or its alternatives of the 11th century at the 13th century.

Another ecclesiastic is at the origin of re-elected city: Yves de Kermartin, patron saint of lawyers, born in 1253 with Minihy, defender of the poor against the power of the rich person.

The current cathedral was thus built (as from 1339, with regard to the body of the church) with the glory of Yves saint (canonized in 1347).

In 1412, Tréguier obtains the statute of city.

From 1450 to 1479, was built around this cathedral a Gothic cloister which shelter the tomb of several defenders and monk of the episcopal city of which Jean V, duke of Brittany and Saint Yves de Kermartin, the owner of lawyers.

Towards 1505, the duchess Anne of Brittany and queen of France carries out a pilgrimage on the tomb of Yves saint.

Between 1589 and 1592, the town of Tréguier is devastated by the Ligueurs. This period of the history of Brittany is synonymous with war of religion between radical catholics (supported by the Spaniards) and Protestants (supported by the king of France and England). The catholics belonged to the League or Holy union and were directed by the duke of Mercœur, the Protestants and royalists by the king Henri IV. Tréguier lined up as regards royalist as well as the town of Lannion. The end of this war in 1598 leads to rendering of Mercœur and by the proclamation of the famous Édit of Nantes.

Revolution

The Révolution sees disappearing évêché from Tréguier the July 12th 1790 (decree of November 14th, 1789) and the last of the bishops, Monseigneur Mintier, flees with Jersey in 1791. Just before, it takes refuge with the Castle of Boisriou with Trévou-Tréguignec. In 1801, Tréguier is attached to the évêché of Saint-Brieuc.

During the winter 1794, the battalion of the volunteers of Étampes puts at bag all the religious monuments of the city: thus disappeared almost all furniture, the statuary, goldsmithery, the stained glasses…

The cathedral was used as stable and was ransacked so much that it could not be used for the worship imposed Être supreme (recognition of a supreme being and immortality). This worship was opposed to the worship Reason founded by Chaumette in 1793.

Tréguier is ruined by the loss of his statute. Before the Revolution, it was populated than Saint-Brieuc, nowadays it is twelve times less populated.

19th century

The 19th century is the period when Tréguier takes again a movement of prosperity thanks to the cultures of vegetables early products and with its port activity

A great project is worked out: the construction of the first suspended bridge in Brittany, the Canada bridge. In 1832, Mr. Ozou, trader with Tréguier propose this project. In 1833, begins construction from the bridge, this one will finish in April 1834. May 25th, 1834 the Canada bridge is opened with circulation. It will be destroyed in 1886, then rebuilt after the Second world war, in 1954.

The 19th century sees the birth of famous and discussed writer, Ernest Renan. This one died in 1892 in Paris. A museum is dedicated to him in the house which saw it being born in 1823.
