Following funny of prototype Publica Sports presented in 1962, Toyota decides the mass production of Sports 800.
Sports 800 or more simply S800 is based on Toyota Publica 800 of Luxury which is a small car 4 places reserved for the Japanese market. Presented officially to the living room of Tokyo 1964, it starts in April production of the following year.
With his original style which does not borrow anything from the Western cars, Mr. Sato created a well balanced car, pleasant under his air of manga. The prow announces future the 2000GT.
Its monopiece steel body is reduced by aluminum panels: caps, doors and removable roof. Reduced to 2 places, it weighs only 580 kg with vacuum.
With 3,58 m length and an engine placed as low as possible, S800 tried to clear a place among the sport scars. Its lack of credibility comes mainly from its engine, borrowed from Publica. The twin-cylinders air-cooled is built very out of alloy. A cubic capacity of 790 Cm3, valves at the head and side camshaft, two carburettors and only 45 ch DIN (49 ch SAE) with 5400 rpm. Honda S800 develops 70 ch at that time!
With a compression of 9:1 top speed is of 155 km/h. The gear box is with 4 synchronized reports/ratios all and the brakes are with drums with the 4 wheels.
It takes part in competitions in Japan in the category of the small-engined cars. It gains the 24:00 of Fuji amongst other things.
The roof can be removed, it is a targa, well 2 years before Porsche. Practically not exported, it is manufactured only 3131 specimens until October 1969.
