In 1994, while launching the first Rav4 , 4x4 compact with permanent integral transmission, any way very at ease on road and downtown, Toyota invented the category of the small vehicles of leisures, so called SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) compact or softroaders. The Japanese giant concretized thus the attempt at Suzuki outlined with the first Vitara at the end of the Eighties, with cross-country genes still too marked. A crenel where was engulfed thereafter Honda with the CR-V and Land Rover and its Freelander.
The second generation presented to the Salon of Geneva 2000 was in its turn renewed in 2006 by increasing each time its gauge: to the 3,72 m departure long and launched in 3 doors, Rav4 gradually passed to 4,40 m in its third generation, only produced in 5 doors; it reaches even up to 4,60 m on the US market.
Rav4 quickly took the head of the registrations of 4x4 all kinds confused in France after the arrival of the diesel motorization in September 2001, coinciding with the marketing of some Nissan X-Trail. With nearly 15.000 unitées in 2002 past in the Hexagon and as much in 2003 (including 80% in Diesel), Rav4 of second generation carried out a double score of the Nissan, however well armed. Small Toy represented then with him only more than 30% of the sales of compact SUV in France. Since, while remaining leader over the year 2007, Rav4 lost of its importance on a market from now on invested by almost the whole of the manufacturer.
