The South Africa account six metropolitan municipalities: Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Ethekwini, the Cape and Nelson Mandela.

It also includes/understands 231 local municipalities and 47 regional municipalities.

All these municipalities also include the Township S as well as the Bidonville S built in an anarchistic way.

A dissatisfied request for housing

Today, more than 7 million South-Africans, on a population of 44,8 million, lives in shantytowns. Since the end of the Apartheid, thousands of people invaded and squatté the urban centres whereas with the accesses of the townships, of tens of thousands of slum built themselves in a completely anarchistic way and not having neither water nor of electricity.

Since 1994, the government built more than 1,5 million houses and built each year more than 100.000 prefabricated dwellings, assembled in less than two days.

Although it is a priority of the government, it is insufficient to face the request.

According to the National institute of the statistics, in 2006, the rate of increase in the population of 1,4% per annum, should reach 2,9% in large metropolises and 3,3% in the medium-sized cities.

Municipal elections of March 1st, 2006

With a rate of participation of 48,38%, the ANC obtained 66% of the votes (against 60% in 2000) representing 3.527 seats of city council men and the control absolute of 200 of the 284 municipalities. She increases her majorities everywhere but in Tshwane a against-performance realizes by gaining one point whereas the inhabitants of Pretoria mobilized themselves in mass to bring their voices to the opposition (nearly 68% of the voices on Pretoria for the DA and the Face of freedom) which had made this election, a referendum on the feeling of Praetorian as for the name change of the South-African capital.

The democratic Alliance carries 16% of the votes and 646 seats (seven municipalities of which the conquest on the ANC of the council of Midvaal to the Gauteng with 56% of the voices and the relative majority of the seats to the Cape)

The Inkatha Freedom Party with 233 seats gains 25 municipalities.

The independent Démocrates with 123 seats are the makers of kings in several municipalities of which the Cape where no majortié absolute got clear.

At the small parts, the plain African Democratic party and the Parti Christian African democrat carry each one 56 seats whereas the Extreme-left of the Congrès African Side (0,86%) reaches a maximum with 53 seats and that the Front of freedom of the right afrikaner (0,68%) saves 44 seats (and the town hall of Orania).

Marginalized compared to its score of 2000, the plain Democratic movement (United Democratic Movement - UDM) finds only 36 seats, competed with by the dissidence of the plain Face independent (0,27%) of Malizole Diko, which obtains 17 seats.
