Town hall of Antwerp

The Town hall of Antwerp is located on the Grand-Place of Antwerp in Belgium. The building of Renaissance style was drawn by the architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt and was built between 1561 and 1564.

The center section on the other hand is more style Gothique, as for others Town halls in Belgium. This center section presents three blazons. The blazon of the Duke of the Brabant on the left, in the center that of the King of Spain Philippe II and on the right that of the Marquis of Antwerp. A eagle figure besides on this last blazon.

Above the blazons a niche appears in which a statue of the Virgin Marie is. She in addition did not always appear there. There was in the beginning a statuette of Brabo, but at the time of the Counter-Reformation, this one was replaced by a Christian statuette.

The lower stage of the Town hall east made up of small doors out of wooden. Those were used as trade in order to finance the building.

The Town hall east in particular composed of:

  • the room Leys, a room of honor for the reception of the hosts. The portraits of the Dukes of the Brabant appear above the doors
  • a small room Leys
  • the room of the Marriages with frescos of Viktor Lagye
  • the room of Walk including/understanding the dress which of the queen Astrid at the time of her entry in 1935
  • wore the room of the Militia with a large chimney
  • the room of the Council where meet the communal Advisers
  • Cabinet of the burgomaster with a chimney of Coecke van Aalst
