Tower of Saint-Jean-of-Old-Aître Commanderie
The Tour of Saint-Jean-of-Old-Aître Commanderie is the oldest visible building of Nancy, it is located Place of the commandery, in margin of the center of Nancy. Dating from the 12th century, it is one of the rare Romance vestiges of the city
Mathieu Ier of Lorraine supported the installation of hospital of the Ordre of Malta in its duchy. The commandery is built in 1140, in open country, near the Midsummer's Day pond, between Laxou and Nancy. It was surrounded by some buildings of which a vault, which all was included in the urban extensions of the 19th century and finally destroyed, except the old bell-tower.
This place is historically very related to the Duché of Lorraine since it was the general headquarter of the Duke Rene II of Lorraine, victorious on Charles Bold the at the time of famous the Bataille of Nancy in 1477.
The name of the commandery also points out the presence of an old cemetery (Old Aître) of the time mérovingienne.
