Tower Hamlets

The London district of Tower Hamlets is a district ( Borough ) of the Large London. This district, founded in 1965 by fusion of the districts of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney, account more than 206.000 inhabitants (2003).

Tower Hamlets is known for its suburbs poor like Stepney, Bow, Millwall, Whitechapel and Bethnal Green, known under the name of East End. Half of its population lives of the social security. It is in Tower Hamlets that the district of Spitalfieds is located, also known under the denomination Bangla Town because of its population mainly originating in the Bangladesh.

Today there are positive elements of the development of the Borough : the project of the buildings of the offices of Canary Wharf, for example. It is with Tower Hamlets that are published the daily newspapers Daily Mirror, Daily Star, Racing Post, The Sun and The Times, of which majority with Canary Wharf, who thus succeeded Fleet Street, formerly synonymous with district of the press. Certain sites of the Olympic Games of 2012 will be also localized in this borough.

Population

According to the census of 2001, Tower Hamlets had a population of 196.106 inhabitants, including 51% of " Blancs" , 33% of Bangladesh is, black African 3% and black West-Indian 3%. 29% of the population are owner of its housing. With 36,4%, it is the British locality which counts the highest percentage of Moslems.
