Towards its destiny ( Young Mr. Lincoln ) is an American film carried out by John Ford, left in 1939.

Synopsis

The young person Abraham Lincoln already engaged in policy, ambitionne to make right. It examines the books and settles a few years later with Springfield to exert as a lawyer. It vegetates in the cabinet of a fellow-member more tested, where the businesses of vicinity are shelled. At the time of the festival of independence, an argument bursts which concluded by an assassination. Lincoln gets busy spontaneously with the defense of both supposed fatal.

Towards its destiny is the second film of John Ford devoted to Abraham Lincoln - it realizes in 1935 I did not kill Lincoln ( The Prisoner off Shark Island ). The account relates to two episode of its life. An introduction is in 1832, when Lincoln engages in the party whig. The man is inhabited, it addresses to crowd, nourishes political ambitions but considers his culture insufficient. He thinks of finding his way in the right. This part is completed by the premature death of an incipient love what commits it to continue in its study of the right.

The film makes then jump a five years. Meanwhile, Abraham Lincoln engaged in the militia of Illinois with which it took part in the war against the Indian chief Black Hawk, the right alone studied and was registered with the bar. However, the second part which starts at the time when Lincoln installs in Springfield hardly refers to these events. She reports the lawsuit William " Duff" Armstrong at the end which Abraham Lincoln obtained the payment of the defendant. The scenario makes variations with the course of the events since this business intervenes well later (in 1858) in the biography of the character. Remainder, the facts are also very fictionalized except however final bounce which, is authentic for him, when it establishes the proof of the innocence of its customers thanks to a farm almanac.

This personal portrait of the cuts and reassemblies often imposed by the producers, John Ford will preserve until destroying the falls of film. The anecdote wants that, initially, Henry Fonda refused to play this part, intimidated by the historical weight which it represents. To convince it, John Ford declared to him: “ You think of playing a large emancipator. It one is only crowned lawyer idiot of Springfield! ” following what the actor agreed to take part.
