Tournament of Toulon

The International festival Hopes of Toulon and the VAr , often called Tournament of Toulon , is an international competition of Football which opposes the selections Espoirs until less than 20 years and not the hopes teams. The original tournament was created in 1967 with 6 teams of club. After 7 years of inactivity, the Tournament of Toulon remakes its appearance in 1974 with for the first time the presence of 4 nations (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Brésil) and of 4 teams of club (Derby County, Anderlecht, Nimes and Mönchengladbach). It will be then the only hybrid version of the tournament since in 1975, the 8 participating teams represent each one a nation (Argentine, France, Italy, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Portugal). The televisual rights are acquired by Eurosport in 1998 allowing its diffusion in the whole world and the tournament obtains the label FIFA in 2002.

Many personalities of the Football took part before their blossoming in this tournament among which appear, in others, Zinedine Zidane, Alan Shearer (better striker 1991), Thierry Henry (better player and striker 1997), Juan Román Riquelme (better player 1998), David Ginola (better player 1987), Hristo Stoitchkov, Djibril Cissé (better striker 2001), Cristiano Ronaldo…

General information

The competition gathers 8 teams selected by the organizers according to their performances or the their most promising evolutions. The 8 teams are divided into two hens with direct confrontations at the conclusion which, are qualified for the semi-finals the two best teams of each group. The semi-finals and the final are also played in direct confrontations. The final stages as several other matches proceed with the Stade Mayol with Toulon.
