The tournament AVRO is a compétiton of failures held with the Netherlands in 1938, and sponsored by the company of Dutch broadcasting Algemeene Vereeniging Radio Omroep . Eights of the best world players clash: Alexandre Alekhine, Jose Raúl Capablanca, max Euwe, Mikhaïl Botvinnik, Paul Kérès, Reuben Fine, Samuel Reshevsky and Salo Flohr. Kérès and Fine finish first, but Kérès gains, because it has the best on Fine (1,5-0,5).
The purpose of the tournament is apparent to designate a challenger with Alekhine, holding of the championship of the world, but it is not a official Tournoi of the candidates. However, FIDE organizes a championship of the world of the failures in 1948 after the death of Alekhine in 1946, and invites six participants of tournament AVRO, Capablanca being deceased and Flohr being replaced by Vasily Smyslov.
