Tourist Trophy of the Island of Man

The Tourist Trophy of the island of Man is a race of Motos which is held on the roads of the island of Man during the first week of June.

The race

It is in 1904 that the Parliament mannois authorizes the closing of the roads so that can be held races of cars, the laws on the freedom of circulation of the people in England prohibiting there to close the roads.

For that it should be added that there does not exist speed limit on the roads of the island.

It is in 1907 that the first races of motor bike will dispute on a circuit of 24  km between St John' S and Peel. Two categories at the beginning, one-cylinder and twin-cylinders; after more than four hours of race, it is one of the brothers Collier, Charlie, which passes the first the finishing line to the handlebars of one-cylinder Matchless of its manufacture, at the mean velocity of 61,46  km/h ! It preceded two Triumph, Matchless of his Harry brother having established the record of the turn but which has not been able to finish the race.

It is only starting from 1911 that the race will proceed on the current layout of 60  km and 264 turns, and she knew only few interruptions, during the two world wars of course, and during the epidemic of " Disease of mouth and pied" , as English say, in 2001.

This circuit is most dangerous in the world: in 100  years, one counts more than 220 pilots died with the tests or in race, between the TT and Manx GP.

Imagine a simple secondary road of on our premises, on which evolve/move of the racing cars launched to more 300  km/h out of top speed!

The concentration must be extreme, to cross the villages at bottom, by shaving the walls, the pavements, the phone boxes. In several places, the motor bikes take off, sometimes at high-speed as in Ballacrye.

There exist other races on the island like the Southern 100 road races and the Manx Grand Prix.

This last proceeds during the last week of August and makes it possible truths amateurs (English) to take down their pass for the T.T of the following year.

Recent dramas related to the race

At the time of the test of the centenary (June 9th 2007), a terrible accident costs the life to the English pilot Marc Ramsbotham, 34 years, like with two spectators of 33 and 52 years and wounds two other people.
