The 93e Tour de France , length 3657,1 km, begins the Saturday the 1st er July 2006 by a prolog from 7 km in the town of Strasbourg and finishes the July 23rd with Paris.

General information

It is the first Tour post- Lance Armstrong which, after 7 years of hegemony, will not take the departure of a Turn which respectively announces very open, more especially as the Affaire Puerto has constrained the principal favorites Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso and Francisco Mancebo, second, third and fourth at the time of the Tour de France 2005, not to present itself at the beginning the day before the Prolog. Moreover, Alexandre Vinokourov, the leader of the team Astana-Würth was also constrained to be withdrawn. That is due to the fact that five runners of its team were implied in this business of doping, but Vinokourov (on the third walk of the Turn in 2003) was not directly implied, but the payment of UCI concerning the Large Turns prohibited a team from taking the departure with only four runners, as that would have been the case without the runners blamed in the Affaire Puerto.

The doping, which involved the disqualification of nine runners before departure day before, catches up with the turn on July 27th, 2006, by the advertisement of the presumption of doping of the Yellow jersey Floyd Landis with the Testostérone at the time of the 17th stage of the Tour de France 2006, confirmed the August 5th after the counter-evaluation. According to its rules, which provide that only the national federation on which a runner depends is entitled to take sanctions against him, the UCI announced that she would ask the American Federation of cycling ( the USA Cycling ) to open a disciplinary proceedings against the American runner. The USA Cycling called upon the conclusions of the USADA (anti-doping of the United States arranges) to slice the litigation. September 20th, 2007, the American Court of arbitration recognized guilty Floyd Landis of doping and condemned it to 2 years of suspension without possible call of the decision. This sentence should make disappear Floyd Landis from the prize list of the edition of the Tour de France 2006 and make it possible Oscar Pereiro Sio to be declared victorious of the test.

An official ceremony took place on October 15th, 2007 in Madrid to declare the new champion Oscar Pereiro Sio.

Presentation of the course

All starts with the prolog in the town of Strasbourg before tackling a stage on a course in loop around Strasbourg, Alsace and Germany then to join the Netherlands with an arrival with Valkenburg and a passage by the Belgian Ardenne S, shortly after the top of the Cauberg, then follow stages of plain. The absence of Against-the-watch by teams will undoubtedly benefit with the sprinters who will on the occasion to take the yellow jersey in first week (except victorious escape) and the leaders who do not have a team of wheelers. Then the first great appointment will come from this Tour de France with the first large against-the-watch individual then the the Pyrenees in which no runner will gain the Turn but where some will lose it already. Ensuites days of escaped with the stages from transition then the the Alps with for first great stage the Izoard, the Lautaret then final rise towards Alpe d' Huez and the following day, inter alia, the Galibier and its 2.645 meters of altitude but which will be climbed by its least difficult slope: Lautaret. Before a last stage of mountain which resembles extremely that of 2000 with the victory of Richard Virenque and the light failure of Lance Armstrong with the Saisies, the Aravis, the Colombière then to finish Joux-Plane then a descent towards Morzine then 2 days later, before last stage: a against-the-watch individual between Creusot and Montceau-the-Mines, is the counterpart of last the against-the-watch of 1998 gained by Jan Ullrich which in the event of new podium would equalize the record of Raymond Poulidor with 8 and in the event of 2nd place that of Joop Zoetemelk with 6. And finally the last day, the prestigious stage of the Fields-Elysées where Alexandre Vinokourov showed us last year that the sprinters were not unbeatable but where they will dispute the last points for the conquest of the green shirt

Account

This edition of the Tour de France makes speak about it already before the departure. Indeed, the Affaire Puerto which splashes Spanish cycling prevents serious candidates with the final victory, like Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso, to take the departure. The team Astana-Würth having many runners implied in this business is found forced not to take the departure for lack of manpower, the payment stipulating that one needs a minimum of 5 runners to take the big departure, and that a runner drawn aside for suspicion of doping cannot be replaced.

The first week containing the stages of dish, it is without suprise that they were gained by sprinters. Nevertheless, the world champion Tom Boonen did not manage to assert himself.

The July 12th arrives the first stage of mountain in the the Pyrenees, it is the Spanish runner Juan Miguel Mercado survivor of escaped with the French revelation from this turn Cyril Dessel which is essential. Cyril Dessel is leader of general classification as well as provisional mountain.

The following day, the escape of the day is caught up with in the last collar, the Russian Denis Menchov is essential on the sprint in front of the American Levi Leipheimer and Floyd Landis. This last recovers the yellow jersey for 8 seconds.

Two stages of transition are followed from there of which the 13 {{E}} stage which will see the Spaniard Oscar Pereiro Sio then 46e of general classification with nearly 29 minutes and its companions escaped to finish with nearly 30 minutes to the group. Pereiro seizes, consequently of the yellow jersey.

The first alpine stage between Gap and Alpe d' Huez will see the Luxembourg Frank Schleck last survivor of escaped with the Italy N Damiano Cunego to impose itself. With the general classification Peirero Oscar which less better went up than Floyd Landis loses its yellow jersey for 10 seconds.

The July 19th takes place the second alpine stage. At the time the final rise on Toussuire, Floyd Landis is victim of a terrible failure and will finish at 10 minutes of the winner Mickael Rasmussen author of a long escape. American plunges to the classification and finds itself eleventh to 8 ' 08" of Pereiro Oscar which recovers the yellow jersey.

The following day, Floyd Landis in a reaction of pride tries the whole for the whole and leaves the group as of the first rise. It initially catches up with an small group of escaped runners to more than 6 minutes then widens the gap up to 9 minutes 30 seconds. In the only portion punt the group will be able to return as well as possible at 6 minutes, it is also the final variation which will separate it from the second Carlos Sastre from now on 2nd of the general, and 7 minutes on Oscar Pereiro always leader. Landis carries out a good operation and goes back to the 3rd place of general classification with 30" only and the big favorite becomes again.

At the time of the penultimate stage, it against-the-watch between Creusot and Montceau-the-Mines plays the part of Justice of the Peace between the favorites for the final victory. Landis, more the wheeler of the three first, manages to produce a good against-the-watch and becomes again leader of general classification, Oscar Pereiro who was given to the maximum manages to limit the damage and is found 2nd at 59 seconds. Carlos Sastre did not withstand the pressure and carries out a very poor time with the against-the-watch, being relegated to the 4th place, Andreas Klöden, the 2 time old author of the stage behind the explosive stopwatch of its fellow-member Serhiy Honchar reaches the 3rd place. Damiano Cunego realizes, him also, an excellent time, enabling him to keep the shirt of better conquered young person the day before with the German Markus Fothen which had it since the first week of the Turn.

The July 23rd, on the Champs Elysées, it is the Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd which had gained the prolog which gains the stage. In the additional classifications, not of change. It is thus Floyd Landis which succeeds its compatriot Lance Armstrong and goes up on the 1st walk of the podium. But at the conclusion of a 14 month legal procedure the grateful culprit of use of doping products, the American runner will be deposed of his title to the profit of his dolphin, Oscar Pereiro Sio.
