  • the prolog is gained by Switzerland Fabian Cancellara, but it is well the American Lance Armstrong (second at 2 seconds), who gains a psychological victory over his adversaries at the beginning of this Turn.
  • Announced like the main adversary of Armstrong, Iban Mayo is disappointing. It falls on the paving stones of North and does not take the departure of the 15th stage. On the other hand, this Turn reveals the Italian Ivan Basso.

  • 21 teams took part at the beginning is 189 participating. These runners were framed by 350 guides (sport director, mechanic, doctor, masseur…) and supervised by the 15 members of the College of the Police chiefs
  • the turn of France cyclist 2004 was very médiatisé with 1.200 more accredited journalists 1.000 technicians or drivers divided in 370 news agencies, 70 local or national radio stations, 75 television channels (of which 21 on line) which have retransmis in 170 country the equivalent of 2.400 hours of diffusion ( 100 days) for several billion televiewers. The test was followed on the roads by approximately 15 million spectators. The official site in four languages was visited by 7 million visitors who looked at 300 million pages.

  • the management of the turn 2004 was ensured by 100 permanent, 200 free-lance and 180 service providers. It took in load 1.200 rooms each day and of the meals, but also the occupation of the public domain at the time of the race and the stages. On the level safety, 12.000 police gendarmes, 9.000 and CRS and 45 republican Gardes motorcylcists were requisitioned on the whole of the course.

  • On the whole, the Tour de France 2004 included/understood 1.600 following vehicles and 4.000 .

  • the advertizing caravan was long of 20 kilometers for 200 vehicles ensuring 45 minutes of spectacle on all the daily course of the race by distributing 11 million gifts of 42 different marks.
