Toupha
The toupha (in Greek τοῦφα/ toúpha or τουφίον/ touphíon ) is a plumeau hairs or exotic hairs of animals used to decorate the helmets with the riders and the imperial crowns.
One of most famous the toupha is that which surmounted the crown or the helmet of the equestrian statue of Justinien on the column drawn up by this emperor with the Augustaion. She is known by a drawing carried out at the 15th century. From particularly imposing size, it had fallen from the statue at the 9th century, and was then replaced by a roofer which had to resort to daring acrobatics: it tightened a cord between the roof of Holy-Sophie and the top of the column by means of an arrow, and could thus reach the statue while going on the cord. The Theophilus emperor rewarded it for 100 gold nomismata for this exploit.
