The Toulouse Football Club is a club of Football French founded in 1937 and dissolved in 1967. This club which bears the same name as the current club high-speed motorboat of the Rose City, the Toulouse FC, however does not have any relationship with the “TéFéCé”.
Roots of Toulouse football
Two clubs dominate Toulouse football before the First World War: the Olympic stadium of the Toulouse students and the Olympian Stage bicycle-sport of Toulouse. The “students” treat to even the luxury to eliminate curtly (5-0!) the Olympic of Marseilles (1905) and the famous Olympic Cettois (1907) in final stages of the championship of France U.S.F.S.A. But, the Toulouse ones never reach the national final, failing in semi-finals in 1905 and 1906. The Students moult themselves in “Stade Toulousain” (1908) and dominate under this name the period going to the First World War, without to reach the national semi-finals.Thus, contrary to a tough legend, the football of “high level” has been practiced in the Rose City for already a century! Toulouse, with the image of Bordeaux, is with the point of football in a zone however largely favorable to Rugby. Let us recall here that the rugbymen Stade Toulousain garner their first national title only in 1912.
The foundation of the club
The inter-war period is definitely more favorable to the managers of oval balloon. However, the idea to create a large club pro in Toulouse emerges quickly. The July 7th 1936, a commission of propaganda for the establishment of professional football in Toulouse meets under the impulse of Mr. Lauriol and the president of FC close Sète, Georges Bayrou. One decides to organize matches of prestige in order to measure the potential of spectators in the city of the violets. The first meeting opposes the Spanish club of Badalona to the FC Sète (victory sétoise 3-0) in front of 10.000 spectators. Sétois face then Cannes: new victory of Sète and especially new popular success. Lastly, the January 3rd 1937, the Toulouse ones taste with European football with a Wiener match of Vienna against Kipest of Budapest. These matches of exhibition being shown conclusive in term of receipts, the creation of a professional club in Toulouse is decided. The March 20th 1937, in a room of 9 place des Arcades au Capitole, is born Toulouse Football Club, whose colors are red and white . Mr. Lauriol is the president. The club is allowed to dispute the professional championship of Division 2 in July 1937. The Stadium (10.000 places) is put in building site in this same year 1937 in order to accommodate next the Football world cup.
Beginnings of the club (1937-1939)
The first trainer-player of Toulouse is the former captain of the team of France, Pierre Cazal. The Red-headed guard and the attackers Cammarata, Laurent and Jelinek are the spearheads of the young team. For their first season, the Red and White finish in honourable a 7th place. In Coupe de France, the T.F.C reaches the stage of the 8es of finale. The Olympic Inhabitant of Lille puts an end to this countryside (1-0).To announce during these years 1930 ' the presence in the team of Toulouse the Andre Riou, future trainer of the club which will be distinguished thereafter by gaining for the first time crosses the championship (1958) and it (1954) from Belgium to the head of the team of the Standard of Liege, always capped of its sempiternal beret on the bench of key.
The Planques center-forward signs in Toulouse for the important sum for the time of 65.000 F. With his fellow-members, it carries out the T.F.C in 4th position of the championship 1938-39.
The club during the war (1940-1945)
But the war intervenes. Many players exile themselves in Toulouse (of which the 1st striker of the World cup Lucien Laurent), and the club becomes a fortified town of French football. During season 40-41, the T.F.C., reinforced by Racingmen Raoul Diagne, Maurice Dupuis and Mario Zatelli, like Lucien Laurent, removes the final of the Coupe de France of nonoccupied zone vis-a-vis Saint-Etienne (1-0 goal of Zatelli). Finally inter-zone, the Toulouse ones, which practices a defensive W.M. with individual marking, are beaten 3-1 by the Girondins of Bordeaux. Second of the championships of zone South 1941 and 42, the T.F.C is finally crowned champion in 1943.
Winners of the championship south 1943:
Azza, Benezech, Camarata, Cross-country race, Daho, Enée, Fascinati, Andre Frey (international), Hoffmann, Jelinek, Curt Keller (international), Andre Riou, Mario Zatelli
The following season, the disastrous reform of colonel Pascot transforms the T.F.C into the Toulouse-Pyrenees. This federal team reaches the 6th place in championship and the 8es of finale of the Coupe de France, while the T.F.C amateur is eliminated in 16es.
As of 1944, the federal teams disappear and the professional T.F.C reappears. Toulouse arrives in semi-finals of the Cut 1945, but is curtly eliminated by Lille, 4-0.
Release with the joys of the Cut (1945-1961)
The T.F.C is transferred in D2 with the resumption of the competitions of peace. Misters Bardou, Masal and Carrière compose the management committee of the club. Cammarata is named trainer-player and recruits Rene Vignal. The line of Cammarata-Keller-Hoffman attack registers 88 goals in the season (only the L.O.S.C., champion of D1, do better with 89 goals), making it possible the T.F.C to finish 2nd behind Montpellier with the goal average and to reach in Division 1. Mr. Bardou leaves then chair it with the feeling of the accomplished duty. Mr. Lauriol takes again his station. New players make their appearance like No5el Sinibaldi, but very quickly, the results are more than average; Mr. Bardou is then recalled to the presidency. He places Enée, player with the T.F.C since 1942, the post of trainer. This one manages to maintain the club among the elite by tearing off the 14th place. With the intersaison 1947, Toulouse loses many players of which Keller and Vignal, yielded to the Racing for 2 MF. The guard Ibrir, Fortunel, Sbroglia and Bilancini endorse the red and white tunic. Always under the control of Enée, the T.F.C is classified 13th.
The great business of the year 1948 is the arrival in Toulouse of the Yugoslav gunner Golob, thanks to the talent of negotiator of president Bardou. The Frères Lanfranchi are also recruited and the T.F.C rises in 9th position in spring 1949. The club of the city of the violets evolves/moves from now on in remade Stadium with nine and being able to accommodate to 35.000 spectators. The following season shows finally the true value of the Toulouse formation, just reinforced by Urbanski and Marty. Seconds with the approach of the festivals of end of the year, the “Violets” take down the 4th place, with some regrets. President Bardou is proud all the same of his team which can count on a faithful public: more than 10.000 spectators of average are recorded in Stadium!
During the period of the transfers, the center-forward Marcel Poblome and the leader of play Gomez leave the pink city, while the attacker of Valladolid Vaquero comes to reinforce the offensive line. During the season 1950 -51, the bad luck is baited on the T.F.C. The infirmary désemplit not and finances are with lowest. In the course of season, the seat of the club leaves the place of Capitole to settle street of Alsace. This removal causes a scission within the leaders, the old ones remaining then in Capitole!
17th with the final classification in 1951, the Toulouse ones find “the hell of D2”. A change takes place then with the head of the club: the management committee is tiny room to six members of which Misters Lonné and Puntis. Mr. Bardou remains president and Enée trainer. He directs a team which records the departures of Fortunel, Sbroglia, Marcel Lanfranchi and Ibrir. To compose its formation, Enée is based on a solid defensive base (Mercadier, Jean Lanfranchi, Libar and Bouchouk), but forsakes the attack somewhat. Result, the T.F.C is 12th of D2, by marking only 52 boxed goals for 57.
This disillusion involves a new palace revolution: Mr. Puntis, former treasurer and patron of the club, is carried to the presidency. He dislocates Enée of his functions and names Charles Nicolas trainer. In same time, the T.F.C loses its international André Frey, with the club since 1944. Quickly, the Toulouse ones are with the fight in top of table with Strasbourg. The decisive match between the two clubs proceeds with the Meinau in front of 27.000 spectators of which a thousand of Toulouse. To this occasion, the supporters of the T.F.C offer to their counterparts of Strasbourg an alive goose. But, because of a very contestable arbitration of Mr. Tordjam , the match, gained by Toulouse 2-1, finishes in greatest confusion: invasion of the ground, intervention of the police force… Blow, Of Strasbourg the, dissatisfied ones, return goose! Of return to Toulouse, the supporters deal with the animal then do it empailler with its death. Thus, this “mascot” will trônera from now on with the seat of the club.
At the conclusion of the season, the Red and White are crowned champions of D2 and reach in the first division. The Toulouse attack is particularly effective with 92 achievements, while defense is hermetic (29 conceded goals). This team 1952 -53 has proud pace: let us quote here the Rouxel guard, the defenders Pleimelding and Hadad, the Rossi mediums, Dereuddre and Cahuzac, without forgetting the frightening attackers Abdelhamid Bouchouk, Mellberg (better striker this season with 27 goals) and the Rytkonen Finn, large high-speed motorboat of the T.F.C until its departure in 1960.
Eliminated in Coupe de France in 8es from finale, the T.F.C takes part in the first Drago Cut. The May 5th 1953, Sochaliens and Toulousains clash finally. Led 3-0 to the half-time, the Toulouse ones go up their handicap after the rest, 3-3! Sochaux is declared victorious after drawing lot… The same year 1953, Toulouse is also finalist of the Trophy Teresa Herrera vis-a-vis the Real of Madrid, which carries it 8-1.
Of return in D1, Jules Religious bigot, ex-international and twice victorious of the Coupe de France, takes in hand the team. Their impetus, the Toulouse ones exploit the first parts in championship, being classified 4th in 1954. Mr. Puntis then leaves his position of president to take again that of treasurer. Mr. Lonné succeeds to him, but is always advised by his predecessor.
The season 1954-55 sees a fierce combat for the first place between Toulouse and the Stade of Rheims. Thursday February 3rd 1955, 30.000 spectators invade the platforms of Stadium, two hours before the kickoff of shock T.F.C. - Rheims. Even the Toulouse owners grant to their employees an exceptional permission! The Valorizek winger opens the mark for Toulouse. The T.F.C then moves straight towards an important victory, when the referee grants a penalty to Rémois. Raymond Kopa transforms it and the two teams separate on this null score from 1-1. Finally, Rémois are crowned champions of France, the Toulouse ones missing the title and a place out of Cut by the Champions, lately created, for four points…
Seventh in 1956, then 8th in 1957, T.F.C.a of the evil to follow well the big-engined cars for the twentieth birthday of the professional T.F.C. To celebrate this event with dignity, the Toulouse ones reach finally of the Coupe de France! The course was however not easy: as of the 32es of finale, the Toulouse ones suffer to beat the modest team of Blanzy-Montceau (2-1). In 16es, carried out 2-1 by Lens, the Toulouse ones tear off the tie thanks to the goal of Argentinian Di Loreto. No suspense for the match of support, the T.F.C imposing itself 3-0.
With the following turn, the Red and White pain to eliminate Grenoble (D2). There too, the match of support is necessary to reach the quarters (0-0; 2-0). Sedan, victorious is presented then back issue. Di Loretto, still, tears off to him the null result in the ultimate seconds of play of a goal of the head. Under the blow of the emotion, Jules Bigot disappears and is transported in the cloakrooms on a stretcher! During the prolongation, the Toulouse ones, boosted, register two new goals, and, in spite of the return of Sedanais, obtain their qualification for the semi-finals.
30.000 spectators with Colombes accommodate the T.F.C and the OGC Nice, big favorite of the test. After 54 minutes of play, the Toulouse ones carry out already 2-0. But in nine minutes, Niçois return to the score. In the ultimate moments of the part, Bocchi strips a shooting of the thirty meters which makes fly. Toulouse is qualified for the first time finally of the Cut Charles Simon!
The men of Religious bigot face the SCO Angers in Colombes. The part is arbitrated, made single, by an English, Mr. Clough. It attends a pleasant match where nine goals are registered! The T.F.C leads quickly to score 3-0 thanks to one doubled of the international Rene Dereuddre and a goal of Bouchouk. Thanks to its system of modern play in 4-4-2, the T.F.C keeps a comfortable advance. Bocchi, Di Loreto and Brahami weigh down even the mark, and Toulouse gains the Cut 6-3.
Winners of the cut of France 1957:
Guy Roussel, Richard Boucher, Rene Pleimelding, Guy Nungesser, Robert Bocchi, Pierre Cahuzac, Said Brahimi, Rene Dereuddre, Eduardo Di Loreto, Aulis Rytkönen, Abdelhamid Bouchouk (trainer Jules Religious bigot)
Four days later, the T.F.C is measured with the winner of Cup English, Aston Villa. On the general surprise, the Toulouse ones are essential 2-1.
In spite of the arrival of Jean Wendling, the years 1958 and 1959 are dull enough for the T.F.C. (10th and 14th, presence of international the Lucien Muller). On the other hand, 1960 sees the return of Toulouse in top of table. Taken along by Rene Pleimelding, trainer since 1958, the guard Guy Roussel, international the Richard Boucher, Pierre Cahuzac and Leon Deladerière, the Swede Yngve Brodd and the Finn Aulis Rytkönen propel the T.F.C in 5th place. This clearing does not last and the three following years the Toulouse ones find the soft belly of the classification.
Presidency of Doumeng (1961-1967)
With the threshold of the season 1961 -62, Jean-Baptiste Doumeng, the “red billionaire” friendly of Mr. Puntis, becomes president. Under its impulse, the Toulouse ones rise again in the 5th place in 1964.The June 16th 1964, Kader Firoud, player during the war, becomes trainer. After one season of adaptation (11th), where Firoud sets up a system of defensive play hyper, the T.F.C hangs brilliant a 4th place which opens the doors of the to him Coupe of Europe of the Towns of Fairs. In Coupe de France, after having successively eliminated Angouleme, Gueugnon, Lyon and Sochaux, the Red and White face the RC Strasbourg in semi-finals. Under the pressure of Baraffe, Dorsini and Jacky Bernard, Toulouse open the mark as of the 11th minute by Soukhane. Following the expulsion of the Toulouse guard Estimate, Soukhane takes its place with aims. The Of Strasbourg one benefit and tear off from it the prolongation in the ultimate seconds of play. Strasbourg removes all the hopes of finale to Toulouse with two new goals.
In 1966, the T.F.C discovers finally the European tournaments. Opposed to the Roumanians of Dinamo Pitesti, the Toulouse ones are essential 3-0 front a small barrack room (5.000 spectators). All seems quite committed to pass this turn, but in Romania, in space the nine minutes, Pitesti returns to the score. Carried out 4-1, the T.F.C remains qualified. But, in the last minutes, the Turkan Roumanian breaks the Toulouse dreams by registering a fifth and last goal.
This season is also the last for Toulouse Football Club. President Doumeng is in the search of money and striking to all the doors, including the town hall, to reinflate the cases of the club. In vain… The club, with players and technical staff, moves then with Saint-Ouen and offers the possibility to the Red Star, which morfond in D2, to join the elite! Toulouse is dispossessed of sound dear T.F.C. ; the professional foot died in the pink city. In spite of the scandal which this authentic flight of club generated, it will still have to be waited several years before the Federation does not limit to a few kilometers the possibilities of fusion between two clubs (years 1980).
