Geography

History

The commune of Toulaud is very old; the root of its name dates from At the time preceltic, the word " Toul" ( tull ) height meant as the topographic situation of the old village indicates it. " Toulaud" for the first time in a writing dating from year 940 after J. - C is mentioned. At the time Gallo-Roman, the establishment of the population is important in the plain. There remain about it vestiges with a Roman wall with the district of the Font, a statue of Roman epoch which was discovered with the district of Fortunière and the Vocance district, of the remains of various potteries dating from the Wisigothe time. With the S, the village is installed on the hill with the shelter of the cruel surges of hordes; from this time, the village had to be strengthened. VIIe and 8th centuries, Toulaud benefits from a relative peace with a rise of agriculture and craft industry. After having crossed difficult periods with the S (One hundred Year old war, Black Death, plunderings by the " Large Compagnies" …), the population finds one era of prosperity to the S with the embellishment of the houses of the village and the construction of a tower of 27 height meters ford. During fratricidal confrontations at the time of the wars of religion, Toulaud was the Protestant stronghold. After the edict of Nantes, the royal troops besieged the village and the tower was demolished on August 28th, 1622. During centuries Toulaud was famous for its pottery. It is Noyer De Gleize which gives him all its gloss with the factory of Prat, under the village, at the edge of Mialan and which said: “this ground makes it possible to make earthenware as beautiful as those of Montpellier and besides”. For unknown reasons, this craft industry disappeared at the end of the 19th century.
