Tottori

Tottori (鳥取市; - shi) is a Japanese city which is the capital of the Préfecture of Tottori in the area of the Chūgoku to the Japan.

The city was founded on October 1st 1889.

In 2006, the population of the city is estimated at 200.022 people and the population density with 639,64 people per km ². The total surface area is of 765,66 km ².

In Japan, the city is known for its dunes, which are a great tourist attraction. The dunes are also an important research center on agriculture in arid medium, in collaboration with the Tottori Environmental University.

The main street of the city (Wakasa) is in the north of the station and finishes with the foot of the mountain Kyushouzan (" pine éternel"). Around this mountain the oldest parts of the city are. In his center, one finds the ruins of the castle of Tottori, which belonged to the family of Daimyō Ikeda. This site is opened to the public and accommodates each autumn the Festival of the Castle. In the vicinity are temples, public museums and parks. The city organizes also in August the Shan-shan festival, known for its dances with large umbrellas furnished with bells. A very great example of Shan-shan umbrella decorates the station of Tottori.

The city is served by two lines of train meeting at the station of Tottori. The voyage since Osaka takes approximately 2:30.

In November 2004, the city extended by including a certain number of zones bordering.
